Is it necessary to play the first one?
I don't see why it would be. There is a plot recap video in the menu, and it wasn't a terribly complex tale anyway. You'd have no problem catching up.

The first one was a bit clunky but pretty awesome. You could watch the whole movie To Kill a Mockingbird on an in-game TV! Shame it's not available on PC or psn, nor is it BC on Xbone. It's a game destined to die with the last console generation. Sad.

I imagine it's gonna be a problem in the future when Sony et al shut down servers for older consoles and everyone loses their digital libraries. I've gone almost completely digital and would lose every Dark Souls except Dark Souls 2, the worst Dark Souls. Very troubling.

That is what backward compatibility is for. ;)

Some other thoughts about Tomb Raider:

1. Why did they change her face so much for the sequel?
2. Why does everyone but Lara have hair gel?

Do video driver updates make your computer capable of playing games it previously couldn't? I'm just looking at random games on CYRI? that I know I couldn't have run years ago but apparently get the tick now.

Drivers can definitely be the difference between acceptable and unacceptable performance, yeah, that's why nvidia releases new drivers to coincide with the bigger new releases.

There are two possibilities:

1. the developer optimised the game post release
2. the GPU manufacturer added game-specific optimisations to their driver

Nvidia and AMD's drivers do a lot more than just implement DirectX/OpenGL these days. For some games, renaming the executable will result in the game performing different or maybe even looking different. The drivers contain a large collection of hacks along the lines of "if the executable name is X and it tries to submit a shader program with hash Y, substitute in this alternative version". So you're not necessarily running the code the game developer originally wrote.

Can I update the drivers for free? I tried to update my graphics driver the other day since Can you run it said it was 33 months out of date. I didn't get far though, since it kept asking me to download apps which then request a subscription payment to update my drivers.

If you bring up the properties for your display adapter there should be an option to update the driver.

In Win 10 you'll find display adapters in the device manager (in the control panel).

Unrelated note: I've started playing FTL and think it's gonna eat 100 hours of my life.

If what moo said doesn't work, just go directly to AMD's website and you'll be able to download the latest driver for you card there.

FTL’s a unique one. It’s got a Binding of Isaac kind of progression mixed with top-down management mixed with real-time space warfare. Narratively it’s like you’re a single spaceship in Stellaris’ world of randomly generated events. It’s addictive as fuuuuuuck.

Life is Strange was fun, though the writing was often horrendous and both the endings extremely unsatisfying. On top of that, solving the season-long mystery by randomly introducing a generic moustache twirling psycho villain near the end was a big letdown. And yet, I liked the general ambience, the rewind mechanic, and found the gameplay relaxing and enjoyable. It reminded me of Heavy Rain in that it was a very engaging experience in the moment but some dreadful writing and plot holes galore really drag it down in retrospect. As far as these interactive story games go, I think season 1 of TWD is still the best.

FTL is still good but a sameness sets in after a dozen hours that makes it less varied than Binding of Isaac. It doesn’t take long for random events to repeat themselves. I’ll probably play a game here and there. It’s definitely worth the price of admission.

Are Tales From the Borderlands and The Wolf Among Us good? I really enjoyed LiS despite the flaws, so I wouldn't mind playing something similar soon. I can grab both for $19 on psn.

I own them both but havent started with either games. Apparently they are 2 of the better Telltale games out there. $19 seems steep though even for both of them combined.

I paid $5 each on PC Steam and I know your PC can handle a point and click adventure game no issues.
