Your CPu and RAM are fine, but your graphics card is pretty bad. I tried to find footage of either new vegas or fallout 3 playing on your card but couldn't find anything, I think it might be playable at lower settings though.

I can't click on it. There's nothing to click on.

Wow, you think it 'might'? Jeez, I didn't think it was quite that bad. It plays Papers, Please and Gemini Rue without any problems!

I mean it's multiple times slower than the card I was running back in 2011, which couldn't hold stable 60 at higher settings, so it's an approximate guess. 'playable' is also a pretty subjective term I suppose. Go ahead and try it, it'll probably be fine but the 360 version would probably be quite a bit better, though of course you can mod it on pc.

I gave my 360 to my nephew, so PC is my only option. Playable to me means just that. I don't mind an occasional slowdown or 30fps or whatever. As long as it doesn't lag too much and I can see what's happening.

I know it's a bit slack, but I wish I hung onto my 360. Nephew is too young to appreciate it fully (really annoys me how he doesn't care about story, puzzles, or progression - he just wants to randomly kill things), and his parents are fucking prudes who won't even let me show him the fun of GTA or any MA-rated game. I got in big trouble with my sister when she saw him playing Crackdown (I guess because of the blood spray) and his father actually broke the AC2 disc when he saw Ezio stabbing a passerby. I think they threw away most of my games :(.

Both 3 and NV are BC on the XB1.

Steam refunds games played for less than 2 hours, so you can test it out if you get it from them.

I've decided I'm pretty sure New Vegas would work acceptably on my laptop so I will download it. But that was yesterday's obsession. Today, my attention has switched to Mass Effect 3. The entire trilogy can be downloaded on ps3 for $10, which is too good to refuse. I probably can't be bothered replaying the first two, but it's about time I finished the series.

I do hope ME3 is better than 2, which I found extremely linear, quite bland in mission and environment design, ridiculously streamlined so that it was barely an RPG, and completely lacking an engaging plot. It was essentially a 40 hour long recruitment mission. The first one was so much better.

3 is better than 2, but the first one, for all its flaws, remains the king. 3 doesn't have ANY vehicle sections (other than on rail) at all, though the Citadel is a big improvement over the shopping mall in 2. They also returned more of the RPG features and made it slightly less fight-heavy, but still more-so than 1.

New Vegas is a way better game, I honestly think you should play that instead. You're much better off giving some money to Obsidian than EA and the hollowed out shell that is current day Bioware.

Speaking of Obsidian, Pillars of Eternity is a very good RPG that should run on a crappy laptop. That is, if you’re up for a 130 hour RPG.

Don't know about 130 hours, but I really like Obsidian. Their games tend to be buggy and often feel unfinished, but the two I've played (KOTOR 2 and Alpha Protocol) were enormously engaging and enjoyable despite the myriad imperfections and a general lack of polish. That's what I'm expecting New Vegas to be like as well.

Pillars of Eternity sounds a bit too generic fantasy though. I might check it out when it's discounted on psn.

It’s a love letter to the old D&D inspired games like Baldur’s Gate, so it is somewhat generic in setting and tone. I was drawn into the world’s lore though, and there’s some good character work. You can partipate in baby sacrifice! The big draw is the complex combat system - you can overcome an initially impossible fight by tinkering with your approach. It’s thrilling and makes you feel smart.

I’ve been looking to snag Alpha Protocol next time it’s on sale. Looks unique.

I bought a hard copy of Alpha Protocol for $6 over 4 years ago and it has sat gathering dust. I guess I might play it one day...

I loved AP to bits at the time, though you guys may not be as forgiving of its many foibles. I just adored playing as a James Bond type in a modern world RPG, and it's perhaps the only game to ever make me feel like my choices genuinely mattered. Here's a nice write up on Eurogamer: https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-01-06-alpha-protocol-retrospective

It sucks that EG stopped doing those retrospective articles. I enjoyed them.
