Yep, I love how much it builds on the original concept. I don't care much for the 'plot' or whatever you'd call it, but the puzzles are an improvement on Braid's and the atmosphere is nice. |

I haven't really stumbled on anything I'd class as a story so far: there was one bit of video that looked like it was from a BBC documentary, and a voice recorder. I am impressed with the world design. Many things that would simply be considered as improving other games' experience are instead key to solving the puzzles: shadows, coloured lighting, sound design, etc. |

It’s an abstract, obfuscated story more about big ideas than anything else. I don’t really care what Johnny Blow thinks about stuff so I just enjoyed the puzzles and environment.m I’ve started Horizon Zero Dawn and hope it answers the question of how the heck her gadget and the dinosaurs are running without a clear energy source. I'm up to six lasers in The WItness, but one of them appears to be pointing in a different direction to the others. No doubt I'll find out what's going on later. I also had a look at the trophy list, almost all of which seem to be hidden and unlock when you activate a laser. It said one of the hidden trophies I was missing had been unlocked by 70% of players, so I went back closer to the starting area and found a set of panels I'd missed that unlocked a peninsula with more puzzles. I'll probably polish them off tonight, since they look like they're teaching me rules I'd already deduced from later puzzles. I've also been finding some of the hidden puzzles that activate the carvings on the black poles. I've got no idea what it is for, but its one more thing to look for when wondering around the island. |

I always get shocked anew by Australian game prices. A year-old game like Yakuza 0 really shouldn't be $79 at JB hi fi. I gave up on that one and instead tried to find RE7. I found a used copy without its original box at EB for $67. Fuck no. Then I looked for Persona 5 but couldn't find it at all anywhere. Then I got disillusioned and got a pack of cigs (and a Soul Origin sandwich) instead. I returned home gameless :(. I almost got The Last Guardian (new: $99, used: $45), but I don't know much about it. Has anyone played it? It looks pretty cool, but I think I've heard the controls leave a lot to be desired. |

Can't say I've played it, I'm pretty sure that's the one I keep getting confused with Shadow of the Colossus (also never played). It has some giant feathered creature in it? There's a rumour about Dark Souls getting a remaster. Would be a good excuse to play it again as it was my fav of the three though it does have a pretty shitty PC version, where-as 2 and 3 were very solid. Hopefully owners of the original either get it for free or at least deeply discounted. |

Yeah, that's the one. It's the same developer as Shadow of the Colossus, which is really the only reason I'm interested in it. SotC is such a beautiful game. Unlike anything else I've ever played. Ico was pretty good too. |

All of those games are currently much cheaper on the PS store (not sure about Yakuza). Persona 5 is $47. |

I don't really have usable internet in my room. Seems like a hassle to move the PS4 just to download a game, though I guess I'll have to. I also got a mall voucher from Santa and was hoping to get a game or two with that.

The Last Guardian is fantastic. A lot of people disliked it because the creature doesn't always respond to your commands which is a design choice rather than just bad controls. It's no more frustrating than SotC was with it's poor controls and the Colossi endlessly trying to shake you off. I saw get it if you're OK with it being a short game (6-8 hours if I remember correctly). |

Can you buy PSN credit with the gift cards? Or are they excluded? I used to buy most of my PS4 games from international stores like Oz Game Shop, then at the Australian stores when the prices started to equalise. But these days, the PSN store prices seem best, especially with the frequent sales. |

HZD is very Witcher 3-like, outright stealing the “follow the trail” detective gimmick and emphasizing the crafting of potions, traps and ammo. It does the latter better though, and the combat is much better, with a focus on ranged weapons, traps and stealth to take down machines (it’s extremely hard to defeat machines with melee alone). The exploration is the highlight - it’s the most gorgeous open-world game I’ve played, and the blend of wilds, pre-apocalyptic tech and new settlements makes for a lot of fun discoveries. The only downside is it hates if you climb mountains, so much so that if you attempt it even in the middle of the map it’ll threaten to reload your last save. I enjoy finding my own way like that. The sidequests aren’t as inventive as TW3’s - they’re closer to Mass Effect’s in quality and tone and stilted facial expressions. If you want more Witcher 3 with some impressive things of its own I recommend it. Edited by Moo, Jan 13 2018, 04:19 PM.

It’s funny how badly they ripped off Witcher’s tracking thing though. It’s exactly the same, but what made it contextually interesting in TW3 was that Geralt was an expert on monsters so it was cool to see him deduce cause by combining simple observations with his own insight. Aloy specifically doesn’t know the world outside of the valley she grew up in, so she doesn’t have much to say beyond “the blood trail leads this way”. So if it’s a tracking quest, you’re in for a big run with little in-between. And considering that this mechanic eventually dragged in TW3, this draaags. |

It actually never occurred to me to get a PSN card with the voucher, but it's a good idea. Alas, that stills leaves me with having to move the console everytime I want to download something, which is impractical and annoying. Might be a good idea to invest in one of those wi fi extenders. What's the price range on those? This has been the most disappointing thing about NBN for me. I have the 'Rolls Royce' FTTP version, yet can't get reception in a bedroom of my relatively small apartment. Is this normal? The room isn't far from the modem. There are a couple of walls in between, but it feels like the wi fi signal should be able to reach my bedroom comfortably. |
