The only thing that worries me about Titanfall 2 is the length of the campaign. I've become used to luxuriously long games in the past year (The New Order, The Witcher, Alien), so it'll feel weird to go back to the CoD-style wham bam thank you mam 4-hour experience. It's just too short considering I don't play multi-player. I'd rather get Persona or Yakuza 0 or something like that with my limited gaming funds.

Get Prey. It rules.

I finally got around to finishing off The Last of Us on PS4. I started the playthrough about six months ago, but found that it drags a bit in the middle. I decided to push through to the end during the holiday break, and I'm glad I did: the story picks up pace again, which got me interested again.

I also played through the "Left Behind" DLC, which was bundled with the PS4 version, which gave a decent amount of story for its length. It also mixed up the combat a bit, giving opportunities to distract the infected to get them to fight human enemies: something I'm surprised they never did in the main game.

So hopefully the next game doesn't take quite so long ...

I’m interested to see where it goes, but it’s such a good character portrait (of Joel) on its own I’d prefer no sequel.

Well, after finally looking at the two trailers for TLoU 2, I wonder if they're looking to switch protagonists and have Joel act more as mentor to the protagonist, similar to Sully in Uncharted?

The second trailer felt like it could be for a completely unrelated game, but it seems some people think it portrays Ellie's mother. There's a lot they could do with the time period prior to the events of the first game, but I hope they don't end up doing something like retconning that Ellie's immunity wasn't by random chance.

Going back to the game length, I think it is really just the Pittsburg section that destroyed my motivation to play. It took too long, and the environments just blended into each other. Comparing that with the later sections where you've got time jumps between seasons leading to quite different environments, and you never spend as long in any of the subsequent cities. If the game had run closer to that pace throughout, I doubt I'd have had any problem with the length.

The Surge is good. It shamelessly steals from Dark Souls, more than anything I've played, but it's a worthy imitation.

Did anyone else play it? It’s so much better than reviews suggested. Similar to Dying Light in that sense, though that game got far more attention than this. You can pause it Jamesh, you’ll love it.

I forgot about that game, it does look kinda neat. What would you say you prefer between it and Nioh? That's probably the two I'll be choosing from next time I want a Souls-like.

I've never even heard of it.

I plan on buying a game tomorrow. Current favourites are Persona 5, RE 7, Yakuza 0, or maybe Uncharted 4 (the cheapest option). I'd also really like to play Hellblade, which sounds right up my alley, but it's a digital purchase only, and the internet reception in my bedroom is spotty at best.

Hard to say. I got tired of Nioh and didn’t finish it, but played it for a long time. A big flaw is a lack of enemy variety, so you end up going through the motions after a while. The bosses are very good. The combat is smooth and complex. The historical and cultural tie-ins are interesting. But yeah, I got bored about 3/4ths from repetitive combat.

The Surge is the jankier game. Lock-on can be frustrating, the camera can be frustrating. Exploration is a lot of fun despite a sometimes confusing layout. It’s definitely more Souls-like in that respect, with a foreboding sci-fi atmosphere attached. The combat is kinetic and awesome. Good enemy variety, the bosses are good. I haven’t finished it, but it’s looking like a 30 hour stretch, which is just fine. I think personally I prefer it.

Of the two I’ve played, I’d pick RE7 over Uncharted 4. Keep in mind it’s a short game (8-10 hours), and that I’m not crazy about the Uncharted series as a whole.

I played through Abzu yesterday. You can really see the influences from Journey and Flower. It looks really nice, but I don't think it'll have the same lasting impact as Journey. I suspect it won't have the same cross over to non-gamer audience due to the more complex controls though (due to the underwater setting, there are extra degrees of freedom).

It looks really nice, with the varied sea life, and the non-verbal story line is enough to keep things interesting (although it is a fairly short game). You don't see many games drawing from Sumerian mythology.

The final few hours of The Surge retroactively make the plot and world interesting as hell. Great game.

I've been playing basically nothing but racing games and occassional PUBG since I got my wheel. Quake 2 and Grim Fandango, which I'm a few hours into, have been left untouched. Just enjoying the driving too much right now. Apart from Dirt Rally I picked up WRC 7 and Project Cars 2, as well as F1 2016 dirt cheap (which I still kinda regret, for reasons I will explain below).

While the circuit stuff is alright, I've cemented my opinion that rally games are superior for my tastes and likely to be my bread and butter for racing games. The driving style is just more fun and engaging, there's way more variety in the driving conditions and there's less burden of knowledge on the driver since you don't need to learn the circuits; you just have to concentrate on judging the road and paying attention to the co-driver. Circuit racing is just so fucking autistic, it's all about learning and adhering to the racing line, and if you deviate from the line your lap is fucked. It's like a test of obedience. An additional issue with circuit games is the AI, while some games are better than others, they're bound to have problems and it's honestly infuriating when you're behind the AI and they decide to take a corner way too slowly, and you ram right up their ass and totally ruin your exit speed, causing you to fall further behind the front of the pack. The rally format completely bypasses these issues.

Rally is arguably harder, at least in some ways, but the jump in and drive value is a lot higher which I greatly appreciate. It's just more fun and less boring bullshit. Learning all of the big, major real life circuits that appear in most of these games will probably alleviate some of the tedium of practice sessions and qualifying laps, but still many other problems remain with these games that I can't see myself buying another one any time soon. Rally da king yo.

I started on The Witness yesterday. It's been enjoyable so far, with a lot of interesting variations on a simple puzzle mechanic. I've activated two of the lasers so far (the tree shadows one, and the one in the swamp area with the tetris block puzzles.

I like the way the game slowly teaches you the language of the puzzles, and you'll often find puzzles you can't do but later discover the rules. There's also been a few cases where I guessed the rules and solved the puzzle, but later discovered my guess at the rules was incorrect.
