Playing Wolfenstein The New Order. I looked back on old posts to see it apparently drags in the middle, but I've liked it enough so far that I grabbed Old Blood too. They're both cheap as dirt at $6 and $9 (lol). It's extra satisfying retroactively to kill Nazis due to Nazis being pretty emboldened these days. Their arch-villainy is a welcome change from their facelessness in CoD: WW2, where the Holocaust is mentioned in one sentence (not by name) but there's a whole conversation about how Nazis are people like us with a rich history of art and literature. But CoD's biggest crime is that it's just patriotic American schlock. The multiplayer is pretty damn boring after a short while too.

I feel obliged to add I didn't buy CoD: WW2, I haven't bought a CoD since Ghosts, fuck CoD.

But this is good, though, not only because it's the truth but I don't think it's a good thing to demonize your enemy to the point that they're not even human anymore (at least if you're doing something supposedly realistic or historically accurate, you can go OTT with something like Wolfenstein). It makes people less likely to realise that they're capable of going down similar paths of extremity if they're brainwashed into believing the Nazis were just 'inhumane monsters unlike us good people'. While I haven't watched the scene you're talking about, I'd be very surprised if it was supposed to be apologizing for Nazi Germany, but likely trying to demonstrate the tragedy of it.

All that said, I do think CoD WWII's inability to call a spade a spade with it's dancing around problematic history is just pathetic. Every cunt on the planet knows about it anyway. What are they trying to do, protect the twelvies who actually buy CoD from all that nasty war atrocity? C'mon. I also think having black female SS running around in the multiplayer is past the point of good taste. If you were so unwilling to compromise on your character customization features you shouldn't have done WWII period.

Been playing through Wolfenstein 2 and it's pretty damn great. Improves on the first game in pretty much every way. Even manages a story that's both kind of touching at times as well as ridiculously over-the-top Nazi-killing fun.

@Curt, I’m not saying you should portray Nazis as not human. Wolfenstein is better than CoD at portraying them as they were: as an insane, stupid, murderous regime seeking to exterminate and enslave other races. You have to get at the true horror of what they were to justify the fact that you’re killing them, but CoD portrays them as faceless soldiers and never touches Nazi ideology, but does spare a moment for the glory of German culture. It’s a bungled set of priorities. I don’t think it’s offensive or that it’s saying Nazis weren’t all bad. It’s just odd that it’s there and is really the only comment the game makes about Nazis except the one allusion to the Holocaust being cruel. EDIT: Actually, I forgot a scene where a German orders American POWs to identify the Jews among themselves. Admittedly, the Nazi comes across as an evil man in this scene.

@nuttz, will get when cheap, it looks great.

The most offensive thing about CoD WW2 is that the Soviet Union isn’t in it.

My theory on why they skated over Nazi ideology goes to the root of CoD. It doesn’t like Nazis, the Nazis have nothing to do with it. At its core, it’s a painfully patriotic series that’s rock hard for the military, so much so that it sought advice from actual war criminal Oliver North. It always emphasizes standing by your brothers to fight the good fight. The good fight isn’t against evil doers, but whoever your superiors want you to fight. Your enemies are always faceless (excluding some fictional villains who cackle about disrupting American hegemony). Your job is to follow your direct superior, carry out his orders and, through a pretense of brotherhood, ensure the survival of your corps. To illustrate the evil of the Nazis would go against the grain, put a face on the enemy, and make you think about the faces of other enemies. Your job isn’t to think, but obey. CoD is a simulator of and propaganda for the US Army experience.

Maybe it's just indicative of how overdone and tired world war 2 is that they don't even feel the need to go into it, or maybe they're just trying to avoid it entirely to, like, mellow out maaaaaaaaaan. If they think showing the Swastika is too much for people to handle then it wouldn't surprise me.

The main reasons I didn't care for The New Order were some distractingly bad plot elements, a lack of consistency in the mission quality and the game's technical mediocrity. However, it did get the most important thing right; the shooting was great. That, combined with the alternate history sci-fi, managed to salvage what would have been not that great into decent, but still fairly forgettable for me. If 2 can address those things I'll probably rather like it, and seeing as it runs on the same engine as Doom 2016 (the most well optimized modern AAA game I've played), that will hopefully be one of those things ticked off the list.

To my very pleasant surprise when I check the steam page, there's a demo available (downloading now)! I'm really glad we're seeing a small resurgence in demos, it's so much more consumer friendly having them around, and it demonstrates confidence in the product. They really were fucking dead in the ground for a few years there, huh?

I assume it’s the secret Hebrew inventors you don’t like? It’s silly, but the story’s told with such style I don’t mind. I just did the worker’s camp mission where you disfigure Engel’s face. That setting reminded me of City 17. This game owns.

I honestly don't even remember that part, but I recall the 'romance' between between BJ and whateverhernamewas being really forced and underdeveloped.

I liked New Order, but got sick of the shooting, so I stopped around halfway through. I thought the story was more than adequate for this type of game, though I never took it very seriously.

Been playing Alien Isolation a bit. Love the atmosphere and the alien is genuinely terrifying, but it's proving a little too hard. The alien is always on me and I keep being spotted even when I'm really quiet and sneaky. The old school save system doesn't help either. I often have to replay up to 20 minutes every time I die, which discourages me. I keep wanting to give up and play gta5 instead, but I'll stick with this for now.

It seems like 70% shooting, 30% stealth. It's pretty fun stealth too. Combined with what I feel is a really impressive atmosphere and well thought out world, I wonder what other shooters I've been neglecting I can get now for cheap. Titanfall 2 comes to mind.

Enjoyed the demo of Wolfenstein 2. Runs like butter. Will probably pick it up cheap one day.

Finished TNO. The story does end up a little half-baked, with the first half being much more solid than the second. The emotional climax is unearned, and the silliness kicks into overdrive and cheapens what’s a really compelling world and engaging plot premise (BJ’s revenge). That said, I had fun with the shooting throughout, never tired of it. Looking forward to Old Blood.

I'm still playing hide n seek with the alien, though I've turned the difficulty down to easy. It's a lot more enjoyable this way. The alien is still a constant threat, but it's no longer tethered to my ass at all times and actually hangs out in the vents occasionally like it's supposed to. Makes the game much less frustrating but no less tense.

Actually I forgot my biggest Wolfenstein peeve, which is that it's almost impossible to tell when you're losing health. You have to refer to the HP at the bottom of the screen, which is distracting in the middle of a fight. A health bar or blood or signs of bullet impact would've helped.
