Approaching the two hour mark in Swapper. Liking it, actually, though the plot seems a bit fedora tipping so far, especially with those talking rocks. It was actually pretty spooky leaving yourself in that ditch when you swap for the first time.

Yeah, I just wanted it to shut up so I could keep doing puzzles. Talos handles it better because it’s optional and also interactive in a fun way.

You should be nearing some mindfuck puzzles now.

It took me a while to realize that stealth is a built-in viable approach to some situations in Stalker. It doesn't give you the slightest hint.

Well I mean aside from the fact it’s called STALKER and you are the Stalker.

Out of curiosity, what difficulty are you playing on? Many fans contest that the hardest difficulty is actually the easiest because enemies die with less shots, the only downside being that so do you. I think I played an upper middle difficulty.

Stalker difficulty (second easiest). It’s pretty hard, in a good way. It looks like the AI tries to flank you and is smart enough to not allow you to camp and pick them off. I’m officially enjoying the game now, it’s very good in spite of its jankiness.

I’m currently at the bar and a bit annoyed that I’ll have to travel all the way back to the start to pick up my mission rewards.

I’m not sure if the sales representative was supposed to be mangled to death by dogs before I reached him, but that was cool.

Ignore the dumb philosophy narrative and enjoy the puzzles and atmosphere. Talos is kinda like Portal in that the puzzles are logical and stick to a particular theme (the cubes in Portal, laser streams in TTP) and are accompanied by a narrative. It's also a philosophically-driven narrative, but not boring like Swapper's, and mostly optional if you don't give a shit.
Did you really not like the narrative in Talos Principle? I thought it complemented the puzzles quite well. I particularly liked what they added in the game's expansion with all the BBS messages.

I did like Talos’ narrative, I didn’t like The Swapper’s.

Has anyone here played Soma? I'm considering getting it on sale. It looks better than Amnesia but I don't know if it would address my complaints about that game or not.

As much as I claim to be an epic, hardcore, "gameplay first!" type of person, I have enjoyed stuff lighter on gameplay elements before, like To The Moon. I've also absolutely loathed others, like Dear Esther.

Curt, how the hell do you deal with those random fires that attack you? The ones that activate when you run through the gas? It seems unavoidable sometimes.

I was just starting to think I was getting a little overpowered when it introduced zombie soldiers and harder fights in general. I'm really feeling the survival aspect right now, halfway through an underground lab with no medkits, dwindling ammo, and spooky noises up ahead. I don't know whether it's a negative or a plus that there's no fast travel so you can stock up on stuff from traders. Probably a plus, but it's stressful at times. I had to do that escort mission through the tunnel with the ecologist with about 30 ammo to start with, quickly grabbing more from zombie corpses so that the idiot ecologist wouldn't get too far ahead of me and get himself killed.

I don't remember having much trouble with those, or really the anomalies in general. I think I just threw bolts around to know exactly how to get around them. I did just read that you can trigger them with bolts and then jump through the flames and you won't get hurt, but for all I know that's an exploit / bug that reclamation may have fixed.

Getting your hands on an artifact that helps you resist fire might help, if there is one. Don't remember.

I always thought the black hole style ones that seem to suck you in harder the more you try to get away were the most annoying.

The effect is kind of cool though.

I love when the AI loses the plot. I was doing the mission where Duty want you to kill Freedom’s sniper so they can storm the base. I enter the base and talk to the guard, who runs away halfway through the talk. It seems like a Duty guy walked close enough to the base to be spotted by the sniper, which causes all of Duty to charge the base, which causes about half of Freedom into war mode while the other half sit around playing guitar and shit. I’m neutral with everyone except the sniper, who I kill, though Freedom doesn’t care. The fight was on too big a scale to see everything, but it ended up with soldiers on both sides dead in each other’s bases. I was able to walk to the Freedom boss, alert him of the Duty guards Freedom had just killed, and got rewarded as if I’d killed them myself. No idea if I made an enemy of Duty. This was honestly way cooler than if it had played out correctly.

I actually forgot about the red forest, that part was cool. You must be on your way to X 19 and the Brain Scorcher? That was another highlight.

I ended up playing until 3:30. I’m currently past the Monolith/Military battle on my way to Pripyat. The escape from X19 involved a shitload of quicksave button mashing.
