I've only played Demon's and would recommend you give it a try. Once you learn to play it, it becomes ridiculously addictive. I loved it.

It may be stingy with checkpoints, but the areas aren't huge or anything (really complex and cleverly designed though). When you level up a bit and open up some shortcuts, you can go back to that first castle and steamroll through it in around 5 minutes.

Here's Yatzee's review

It's pretty funny. He has since become a huge fan of the Souls games, but it's fair to say he was still a sceptic back then.

I'd recommend DS3 or Bloodborne for accessibility. The combat is way smoother and there's much less infuriating bullshit like life-sapping poison swamps and janky platforming. Bloodborne is the better of the two, but a harder game.

Edit: Thinking on it, Bloodborne easily has the hardest opening few hours in the series. Go with DS3.

I dont own DS3 yet or Bloodborne. Because Demon Souls is a trilogy, I think I would start with the first. Im guessing the story isnt really a continuation but I do have the first 2 games in that series so rather start with the oldest.

I have put it off for so long now and should give them a go but with uni I really dont want to be playing 1-2 hour sessions at time just to make small progression or lose it all entirely. Probably wait until the term is over and try it out.

That's the whole game though. Demon's would be about 4 hours long if you could just rush through the areas right away. The fact that progress is so slow at the start (it gets faster later on) and it's so easy to die just makes the game incredibly tense and scary. It is frustrating initially, but then you learn to adapt to its punishing rhythms and every bit of progress becomes hugely satisfying.

I did nearly give up in the first level though.

You're not missing much by skipping Demon's Souls. I personally love it but it can be a very obtuse game at the best of times.

It's aggravating that in these times of constant re-releases there's still no Demon's Souls or MGS4.

It shouldn't be too long before they do a pachinko version of MGS4. They've already done one of MGS3, complete with new cut scenes done in the Fox Engine.

Yeah it is kinda annoying that MGSV (as much as I thought that game was a big disappointment) is on steam with none of the rest of the series to go with it.

The only reason I even posted that was because I forgot to kill myself after beating Dancer and then got killed by two laggy invaders.

Seppuku is way to victory, Moo-san.

PC must get a lot of invasions. I recently played through the game for the DLC and got invaded maybe four times.

It's not really THAT common but it sounds like I'm definitely getting more than you did. I've had I think 5 so far?

It's likely a product of the PC souls community being more concentrated in 3 where as on PS4 its likely split between 3 and BB, and probably a decent number again off playing Nioh.
