I'd just like to say that, as a player who never once got invaded in DS1 or 2, that it is just abysmally unfun and awful. I haven't been able to win a single invasion due to lag. If I hit them first it doesn't matter because the hit doesn't actually register until about a second later, so if we both swing at the same time we both take damage rather than me interrupting their swing and punishing them appropriately. Same thing if I manage to get behind them after they swing and miss, I'll hit them, but because of lag they get to put enough distance between us before the hit registers and they stagger, meaning I can't punish them with multiple hits.

From here on in I'm going to go out of way my to kill myself after defeating bosses. Having an ember is absolutely not worth it since it's just asking to get fucked.

I know I could always just play offline, but the messages are pretty useful and make the game feel less lonely, same thing with bloodstains.

I think it's janky as hell but I occasionally enjoy it. It's a bit annoying that you don't have the option to switch off invasions but keep messages, since not only are messages fun but essential to finding some of the hidden stuff.

Don't see the point in wasting an ember though. They're not everywhere.

I'm playing Nioh. It's Samurai Dark Souls and it rules.

I don't see it so much as a waste because after I've beaten a boss it's served its purpose, it's the only time I ever pop one. I'm going to lose it anyway either by getting invaded (not fun) or just dying while learning the way to the next bonfire or boss.

Nioh does sound cool.

Psh, I'm too hardcore for that. Wanna know how much of a badass I am? I didn't even boost my estus flask recovery until over 20 hours in. I've been playing on hardmode this entire time because I didn't read the description for Undead Bone Shards.

Fo' real though, going from 9 charges of the base estus to a +5 estus flask made a pretty hooge difference.

Im still contemplating getting into the Souls series, really worried its just going to punish me for dying and make little progress as a result. Unsure if I can fully commit still. I feel that I have the skills to complete the game but it's mostly time dedication that I worry about.

Still have my PS3 laying around for Demon Souls.

Never mind, I beat Aldrich first time with little resistance. Quite the contrast from last time I stepped foot in that place, I suppose thats why we don't get generous giantess jugs for reward this time.

Dying really isn't that punishing as long as you spend your souls as soon as you have enough to level up and/or buy whatever it is you're saving for. I think the difficulty of the games is exaggerated. They're challenging, but nothing really noteworthy for anyone who played stuff in the 80s and 90s. If you have patience with fights and don't do anything dumb with your leveling they're very manageable games.

A good thing about these games that I don't take advantage of is that you can dash through most areas without getting attacked. You'll miss out on secrets and items for not exploring enough, but if you're sick of being knocked back to the same checkpoint the option to dash through everything is there, and you can always return to those areas at your own leisure to explore. The exception is bosses, of course.

In case you didn't notice, his upper body is actually the god Gwyndolin (DS1's endless hallway boss) sticking halfway out of his mouth because he was eating him before you showed up.

Demon's Souls is infuriating at the start because there are no checkpoints before the first boss, so you just get booted to the very start of the area every time you die (and you will die), potentially losing up to 45 minutes of painstaking progress each time. It gets more manageable after that, but it really tests your patience in that first area. It's so satisfying when you finally get past it though.

Should I just skip it all together and go into Dark Souls 1?

I dont think I could put up with that. Recall also that Demon Souls was the most punishing for checkpoints.
