I'm playing on hard and they were quite difficult at first since they could kill me with a few hits. They're also a problem when they're in groups. The cool/frustrating thing is when they attack and then hide again, since they can travel pretty far away and get the jump on you again.

My biggest gripe is the anti-gravity mechanics. Cool idea, but it's like experiencing vertigo. Atmosphere is nice though.

So a friend of mine gifted me PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS, truly a superb title for a game if I ever saw one, but not as good as the devs who go by the name 'Bluehole Studio' which I invariable misread as Butthole Studio every time I see it.

I must say I've been rather enjoying it after an extended leave from all competitive multiplayer. This whole survival, battle royale genre is one I've largely ignored. This same friend gifted me Arma 2 back in 2012 to play Day Z which I thought was absolutely abysmal. This one, despite being still pretty rough around the edges and obviously being unfinished due to early access, is pretty fun to play. It's just a way better execution of that kind of concept; far more accessible, fast paced, doesn't run AS bad (still a long way to go), far better controls and user interface etc. It has that similar butt clenching intensity to it that counter strike has, and actually pulling off a win (I got my first two wins FINALLY last night after playing for a good 11-12 hours total) is genuinely thrilling because it's so difficult to achieve (games are 100 players).

I hope and look forward to seeing this game become more polished and full featured, because there's definitely something great here.

Loved Day Z and would definitely buy Battlegrounds if my computer could handle it.

It's currently only available on PC, but Bluehole is working on bringing it to Xbox One and PS4.

I think it'll probably end up similar to games like Team Fortress 2 and Counter Strike where it exists on consoles but doesn't have much an audience so the game doesn't get updated with new features and content. That and I dread the idea of having to do the not only the shooting, but the inventory and loot stuff with a controller :X .

Yeah this game's alright. Fun story with this one though. I landed in a nearby block of buildings and knew that two other people had landed near there. Noticed this jeep on my way in and planned on getting in it after finding some weapons.

I quietly made my way over to it and figured that somebody else might too, so I crouched down behind the jeep for a bit waiting to see if anybody tried. And sure enough this poor bastard came along. I watched him over the jeep as he ran across the road towards it. I held still with my M4 praying he wouldn't see me. Luckily he didn't and as soon as he got into the front seat, I popped up and injected 7 bullets into his skull while he sat there helpless.

And then physics happened and he juddered around for a bit before he hung out the window by one foot and I drove off with him. But the sheer brutality of it made my heart pound for a while. Very quiet and super tense for a while - and then very quickly, loudly, and violently it was done.

Proceeded to mow down two other people out in open fields. That was fun, but I only made it to #20 :(

I still haven't won a game but have made it into the top 10 once or twice.

It's those little stories that are why I loved Day Z. My most memorable online experience ever was coming across some random in the wilderness and, after a tense introduction, we ended up traversing the world together for two hours while he showed me the ropes, with things ending when we entered a town and got separated and I got cornered in a shack by zombies.

Well I've had PUBG for a week now and had my fourth win tonight, definitely my favourite. Here's a map for reference.

I was playing Duals with a friend, a full 100 player game, 50 teams competing. We jumped to the eastern outskirts of Georgopol and grabbed a bike and went NE super fast to Severny, which was luckily in the circle and we had it completely to ourselves. I got probably the most well rounded loot I've had since playing. Lvl 3 vest and helm, lvl 2 bag, fully tricked out SCAR with holo sight and AK with compensator and 4x sight, plenty of ammo for both and meds and boosters for days, as well as sufficient grenades.

Then we went to the houses south of there, looted those, then the gas station south from there. Wasn't any loot in it, but the house on the hill across the road to the west had a couple of guys, we had a long range fight with them. We fucked them up but didn't quite get them, so they retreated in the house. Then I started hearing what sounded like more shooting in that direction which I believe was more company for them since they weren't watching us at all.
I made a judgement call to take advantage of them, so we crept up the hill using it as cover. As we were three quarters up the hil they got in their buggy to try and fly off, I badly wounded one of them and my buddy finished him off and killed the other.
So we looted them, another solo guy turned up in a vehicle since the house was just in the circle so it was a good spot. My buddy killed him as soon as he pulled up.

Then we waited in the house for a while, looking out. The circle was pretty close to the house so we took a bike into the circle to a really good part of the hill that would cover us, and just kept crawling up as the circle shrunk, hiding behind trees and rocks while everyone else slowly killed each other off. 20 remaining... 15 remaining... 10 remaining... We're yet to be spotted. One guy came behind us, I heard his footsteps in time to react and luckily he didn't see me proned in the grass. I think he was looking at the map, he must've been not to see me so close, I was like 10m to his 2 o'clock (Pro tip; play with shadows, foliage, post processing and effects on very low for maximum visibility if you want to actually win). So I sprayed him down with the SCAR, scoring my first kill and definitely saving both our asses. If he'd noticed us he could totally have killed us.

It got down to just us and two other squads, we're still hidden and unseen (by anyone still breathing that is) until one team killed the other so it was 2v2, us and them. Both of our teams were split apart to improve our chances, you don't want to be spotted together at the end like that.
Basically we spotted one of them further down the hill so I wounded him heavily with the AK before he got to cover and downed my team mate. Then I spotted the other remaining fellow up on top of the hill with me. Luckily I got the drop on him and quickly downed him, before the guy I had wounded before spotted me and started pot shotting me. Fortunately he must've been low on ammo from killing my friend, which gave me an opportunity to stand up out of the grass for some clear scoped shots to finish him, winning the game on 3 kills. That last bit happened just as the circle was swallowing me, and it likely would've killed me within 10 seconds.

I've never played a game that's as satisfying to win as this one.

Do you win by being the last team standing or getting the most kills?

last team / person standing, kills simply gets you more points for buying clothing crates. You also get a win if you died but your team member carries on for the win.

Damn dude that's awesome. Also 4 wins?? I've had the game for a month and still haven't won, though I have less hours than you so I'd say my time with it has been far too spread out to really improve.

I've been thinking more about strategies on where to drop out of the plane. I tend avoid the bigger towns and find smaller blocks of houses where I can usually find some decent gear to start off with, and if I'm lucky I'll get enough to be well equipped to win in theory.

But I have dropped in a bigger town, with the idea that because it is bigger, there is enough room for me to loot some good shit real quick and get out of there without anybody noticing. It seems to work most of the time.

Have you found something that works for you more often?

Well 3 of my wins have been in squad and that one in duo. Solo is definitely the hardest to win and I don't really play that mode since I just don't enjoy playing mp games alone. So that's the first thing, play with somebody with a mic. It's more eyes, they can revive you if you're downed and you can exchange loot. It's just better.

I always go to the decent sized towns, but there's no reliable one to go to that's the 'best' every single match since the town you go to should always change depending of the trajectory of the plane (and to a lesser extent, the circle), which determines what areas most of the players decide to go to. What I've been doing is basically to drop somewhere to get a vehicle and then drive out to a good town that is way out of the way of where the plane went, as to get it to ourselves. Just study the interactive maps out there so you know 2 or 3 good vehicle spots go jump for.

Let the plebs wipe each other out, by the time you're finished looting you'll be down to 50 or 60 players without being in a fight yourself yet. Other than that, in order to win you just need to keep your eyes peeled, shoot straight and also have luck on your side. Every single one of my wins had good luck involved, mainly RNG for favourable circles and other squads getting into fights with each other, as well as good loot.

Also as I mentioned, turn those graphics settings down. There is zero advantage to having things like shadows up. You can't see stuff as easily and and you have lower FPS.

Oh yeah, and make sure you tab loot (open the inventory and drag things over from the "ground" section of the screen) rather than mousing over things and pressing F. It bypasses the pickup animation so it's fast. You can also tab loot and just right click rather than drag, it still plays the animation but it's way faster than the manual method. It's way more efficient and means you can get more buildings done before fleeing the circle.

Yeah I've already been using the tab screen to loot. It's too easy to miss stuff on the ground otherwise and it just shows everything in your vicinity. I also avoid gunfights where I can and will end up in at least the top 30 in almost every game.

I'll definitely have to try landing near a vehicle and using that to get aware from the plane, that's an interesting idea. Also will have to put the graphics settings right down. The game's framerate isn't great so that'll help in two ways.

Not sure about playing with randoms in squads but maybe I'll give it a try.

Replaying GTA5. I always loved it but forgot just how good the dialogue is. It shits on everything, including a lot of movies. Of all the "about America" stuff I've read and seen in recent years it's my favourite.

Haha that is such a generality that it barely means anything at all. I've had bowel movements better than a lot of movies.

I can't imagine any gta beating Vice City, which was truly lighting in a bottle. It is an incredible (mostly comedic) masterpiece. The tone, the atmosphere, the city. That was the game that convinced me that this peculiar hobby of ours isn't a total waste of time. San Andreas (and especially gta4) is the fucking dregs by comparison.
