And now I hear about "The Surge" for the first time, a sci-fi Souls style action RPG. There's been a decent stretch of new big budget IPs lately: Nioh, Nier, Prey, The Surge. Looking forward to Prey 4 and Nier 3 Remastered in two years.

IGN ironically gave the PC version a review rating of 4, siting glitches to be the main issue which apparently has now been patched, I thought GS was already harsh with the review on the game.

lol a 6? What horseshit.

I'll have to try out System Shock 1 & 2 after this. Everyone went crazy about how excellent it is when Bioshock came out too.

I've tried both, back in 2012 or so.

The first one I really, really gave a good shot and actually got a good 90 minutes to two hours in, but ultimately dropped it due to it just being such a clunky, archaic game (such as having to download a mod just to have mouselook). The controls of the cyberspace parts was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. A very ambitious game but I think it's aged very badly in the general interface and controls which will be pretty unwelcoming and unintuitive for most new players.

The second one is way, way more accessible but still firmly in old skool territory by today's standards. I got past the tutorial and then died in some pretty crappy melee combat, and I just gave up because I just wasn't in the mood at the time. I do own it on GOG so I should really give it another shot one of these days. With some adjustment and persistence I'd probably be able to get into it. It would be nice to know what people are going on about when they say Shodan is one of the best game villains ever.

I don't wanna read it yet because I want to avoid any spoilers at all (and that dastardly snake Jed Pressgrove frequently spoils games in his reviews) but whatever, it just means it's gonna be a *cult classic* for serious gamerz like myself.

It's written by Justin Clark and he gave it 2.5/5

Started both Dead Space 3 and Castlevania 2 and both games kind of suck. I enjoyed the previous games in the series but unsure if these are just bad games or that I have just been spoiled by playing far better games recently and these just cannot compare.

I really didn't like Dead Space. I expected it to be scary, but the monsters jumping out behind me got old really fast. The main things that annoyed me were the completely workmanlike mission design and the idiotic story. There was no atmosphere as a result. You dutifully fixed this, shot that, and there was the whole game in a nutshell. The only thing that was fun was cutting the monsters in half with your plasma tools, but even that got boring a few hours in.

Almost as overrated as True Detective or Forrest Gump...

See I thought Dead Space 1 did a decent job with atmosphere and to a lesser extent the story, Dead Space 3 has little of any of that, it became COD. Im up to chapter 5 and considering dropping the game.

Chess going badly again :(. I have lost 9 out of the last 10 games, most from clear winning positions (in the last game, I was a queen up and somehow contrived to lose! A few games ago, I had 2 queens and 2 rooks to his queen and a rook, but he somehow still got me). It's excruciatingly frustrating, because once I start losing, I find it almost impossible to arrest the slide, regardless of the board position or the opponent's rating. The annoying thing is that I don't feel I'm doing anything different from when I'm winning, but the opponent just always finds a way to beat me and I seem to be powerless to stop it. It's ridiculous how big a part confidence plays even in a non physical game like chess.

A couple of days ago, I was almost at 1400 rating and felt unbeatable. I was even reading up on Bobby Fischer and felt some kind of affinity with him as a fellow chess master. It's like chess gods decided to put me firmly in my place for my delusional thinking. Now I'm barely hanging on to 1300, back to square one.

I think I should remove chess.com from my phone. I've been taking it way too seriously and it has a much too large an impact on my general mood.

Prey status: still great.

I've been savouring it every night or two instead of hogging it down like I normally do with games. It's still a blast to explore, especially when you're creeping through darkened offices with this shit playing:

This attitude reminds me of when I briefly got addicted to online poker and would obsessively chase losses until I lost all my money ($100) and punched my laptop screen, leaving it permanently flickering until I had to get rid it.

Haha, the difference is that poker involves a good bit of pure luck, whereas chess is primarily about intellect and strategic thinking. I'd feel better if I could blame bad luck k for my losses. Also, this chess thing is solely about ego. If I played for money, I imagine there would be more than one hole in the wall and/or broken window...
