Yeah, the influences from other games are everywhere, but it's clear Nintendo are really good at copying ideas and building on them/presenting them differently.

It's funny though that the puzzle shrines even use the same blue/orange schematic as Portal.

Why does everyone say they don't teach you about cooking!? The old man tells you exactly how to do it in the mini quest to get his jumper and get to that second plateau shrine

Damn this game is FUN! Little too much blind running around and I'm not a huge fan of the graphics but... FUN!

I never did the warm doublet cooking thing but you pretty much tease out how cooking works by reading the item descriptions.

I not only love the blind running around, it's made up the majority of my playtime so far.

Also aside from framerate drops the game is drop dead gorgeous! It's the zenith of what they started in Wind Waker and built on in Skyward. I'm just floored by it sometimes, it feels like I'm running through a painting.

So I started playing a Death March new game plus in witcher 3 the other day. Trying to make this one relatively different from my first playthrough. Playing with KBAM now that my PC is up to the task for consistent 60fps (after early adjustment pains I've decided it's definitely the better way to play than controller, guess it shouldn't be too surprising or weird as it's how I played 1 and 2), I'm using a tanky heavy armour alchemy + combat build which really takes the edge off of deathmarch. I will also make a couple of different decisions this time around.

I think what truly makes this game great is the quest quality. While there are recurring and repetitive gameplay elements (to be expected of a game this size), W3 totally excels at making the quests interesting. There's just always some kind of twist with the set-up or plot, some morally ambiguous decision making or an intriguing folk legend flavour that makes me genuinely interested in what's happening. A lot of the time in games I see the story as being a thin veil over a basic gameplay skeleton that is easy to look past, but this game is so consistently good with immersing me in the quest itself that any present repetition or obvious gameplay structure / pattern is easily forgiven. I think that is the game's one true masterful trait that made it such a memorable experience for me, and additionally has made me even consider replaying it again. Normally for me playing a game of this length twice would be totally out of the question and I wouldn't consider it. That said this playthrough will be much more streamlined. First time around I did basically everything, I'll just be sticking to the main stuff and doing some side content where needed for leveling.

I'm currently in the midst of the bloody baron questline. While I've always agreed with your view, Moo, that it was the strongest story portion of the game; playing it again really cements that opinion for me. It's great stuff.

How's the game working out for you, Raz?

Agreed about quest quality, in fact I think Zelda is definitely more in that line with sidequests than something like Skyrim (though to be fair to Zelda it's been good at sidequests since Majora's Mask and it's a shame it took them this long to make them prominent again). It's obviously not on Witcher's dramatic level, but opts for little comedic situations with well-written dialogue and compelling hooks. I'm convinced the rather boring main story was not written by whoever wrote the sidequests, which are Paper Mario levels of funny. I'm willing to go on a fetch quest because, for example, I need to know what happens when the nerd presents the sexy Gerudo with a flower. The result is worth the trouble. I say "trouble", but really I'm actually enjoying going on fetch quests in this game. I can't describe why.

From what little I've watched of streams it does look like a game that is enjoyable to go off the beaten path. I'll definitely get my hands on it at some point in the hopefully not too distant future but I just don't like paying full price for games. Maybe my bro will go halves with me.

On that subject, I'm curious as to why PS4 and Wii U exclusives are always $80 maximum instead of $100. What dat?

If they're first party exclusives then they're probably not having to pay the "You released a game on our console" tax so they can be more competitive price wise?

Well uh, not regretting exploiting Nintendo's dumbass decision to release Zelda on the Wii U.

None of that glitchy stuff has appeared while I've been playing. The biggest glitch I got was a treasure box appearing before the rock it was hidden inside loaded in.

Oh god, that usb charging cable on the bottom of the tablet. I can't believe big companies still make stupid design mistakes like that. I did hear about the dead pixels. It's looking like a bit of a dud console so far. All these problems and the one system selling game it has is on Wii U...

One thing I've noticed about BotW from watching is a lack of music, which is rather uncharacteristic for a zelda game. Any insight on that?

I love the lack of music. Really adds to the atmosphere.

Has anyone used an Amiibo yet? I've tried a couple but haven't hjad any success. Not sure if there are system settings or something I need to enable (already enabled Amiibo in game).

One thing I love about running around is that you can climb almost everything! It's so much nicer than running along small cliff edges looking for a way up! :)

Scratch that. I just realised that you have to use a Rune to enable NFC to read the Amiibo.

Agreed with Chickan: the lack of music is great, it adds so much to the "wild" feel. It just wouldn't be the same with traditional Zelda tunes. They do show up in towns and villages. Also there is music out in the wild, but it's very subdued in a way that accompanies the aesthetics so well.

I really loved the silent moments in ocarina of time at night and sunsets with just the ambient noises of birds and running water. Just don't know how I'd feel about it being that way the majority of the time. I'll find out when I play I suppose.
