Personally I think that consoles reliability records have been disgusting the past 2 gens. If I still had my Atari 2600 today it will still fire up without a hitch.
Yeah, agreed, it's been pretty shit. On one hand you could chalk it up to the usual law that the more complex things get the more can go wrong, but I think it's a lack of careful design and probably poor component quality in some cases, since as you say the Wii and Wii U have both been very reliable machines while actually being super compact, which you would think could only lead them to have more problems. Sure, they haven't has been as powerful machines compared to their competitors, but they've still gotten faster hardware while maintaining the reliability.

I also don't like it when a hardware fault gets carried on from one console to the next. Both my XBOX and my 360's disc drives started getting jammed when I opened them, which I'm chalking up to low quality components. I've never had an issue like that with a PC drive.

Good thing about PC is that if a part is a faulty, not only is it easy to replace as I mentioned before, its likely you will get an upgrade on that component rather than a replacement part.

PC faults though for gaming is often software related. I have had some games even through Steam not always work from missing drivers for controllers despite saying its supported or flat out not loading at all. Thing is there is often a workaround if you can be fucked researching alternatives or adjusting a config file etc.

The past 2 gens with consoles I have had to buy second iterations of the same unit, its disgraceful. Getting to the point now where I feel like I should just wait it out until the mid life release has been launched.

To be fair to Sony, my ps3 never gave me a single problem in 6 years, despite severe mistreatment on my part. I had it sitting right underneath an open window for years, and it would often receive a thorough soaking when it rained and I wasn't home to close the window. Yet it never developed an issue and still works as good as new. Ps1 was similarly sturdy. This is the first Sony console to give me headaches.

As for Nintendo, my N64 simply gave out one day and refused to turn on ever again, so it's not like Nintendo is infallible in this regard.

360 was the worst by far of course. Disappointing, since the original Xbox was a very durable beast that still worked well over 10 years into its life when I threw it out during the move last year. Although I must admit my 360 has worked flawlessly since I got it back after a rlod incident several years ago. I don't know what they did to it, but it fixed it right up.

My only console that never had any issue of any sort is my PS2 slim, still going strong to this day. My N64 still works but sometimes it takes a few attempts for it to read the cartridge, though that's arguably my fault because I did that trick in Ocarina a bunch of times where you partially lift the cartridge and glitch out of Kokiri Forest without doing the Deku Tree.

Yeah the 360 was definitely the worst. I had a white 360 pro that never had RROD but I got some other issue entirely where it just stopped reading my hard drive so it wouldn't start up at all and I had to send it away for repair so it may as well have been RROD.

Taking a few attempts to read the cartridge is pretty normal I think. To my understanding blowing on the game that everyone does doesn't actually do anything, it's the repeated inserts of the cartridge that scrapes corrosion off the pins and allows it start up.

Credit to sony with the PS3: they were the only ones to get it right that we need both built in wi-fi and rechargeable controller batteries out of the box, and you were given the freedom to use any compatible laptop hard drive to upgrade the storage. Microsoft were total nickel and dimers with all that shit, selling their stupidly marked up wifi dongles and hard drives, with stories abound of you getting banned from XBL if you used an un-official one of the latter because that was "modding your console". Of course lets not forget eggs bog live charging you to see ads on the dashboard and play peer to peer multiplayer games. You could also download themes for free on PS3 rather than being forced to buy them like on the 360.

The 360 was a better system for multi-plats than the PS3, sure, and live was better than PSN at the time, but the PS3 was better in so many other ways.

Funny thing is my 360 still works (60GB Pro version). My XB1 works fine. Just Kinect died and both controllers had horrible stick drift (one on the left, the other on the right) within the first 6 months but the replacements all work fine since then. All my old consoles/handhelds work from Nintendo, MS, Sony and Sega.

Maybe when you guys go buy a new console next time, I should pick it out for you for good luck. :D

That good luck might have something to do with when you buy the system perhaps? I'm sure most consoles undergo quiet little changes. Sometimes a system might be made with higher quality components at launch but then has cost cutting measures taken to it as time goes on. Sometimes the opposite.

Fucking unplayable. I tried to have a Witcher 3 session just now, but couldn't get anywhere because the console kept spitting the disc out every 5 minutes. It literally happened 6 times in barely over half an hour of attempted play. For all intents and purposes, my ps4 is broken. I knew about this disc eject issue, but I didn't realise it was so crippling. Damn it, I really felt like playing it. It's a good day for it, being so rainy and bleak.

It's weird though, it's only been doing this since I started the witcher. It worked perfectly with Until Dawn. There wasn't a single instance of the disc ejecting.

Sony seems to have had a habit of putting style ahead of usability or reliability in the buttons on the first iterations of their recent consoles. For the PS3, the touch sensitive buttons were replaced with cheaper looking but more functional regular buttons.

For me personally, I haven't ended up using the buttons on my PS4 much. When I want to turn it on or off, it is usually more convenient to do so via one of the controllers or via HDMI-CEC using the TV remote. When I've finished with a game, I usually eject it via the UI so the disc will be out when I walk over to the console. I wasn't attempting to avoid the button problems, but it may have helped.

And since this is a relatively recent purchase, definitely follow up on it with EB. Even if it is second hand, the purchase is covered by the Australian Consumer Law. If you've lost your receipt, there are other ways you can prove the purchase. If you paid by card, your bank statement should show when you bought it. If you are a member of EB's loyalty program, they probably have a record of your purchase too.

This probably doesn't count as a major fault, so they are probably within their right to offer a repair rather than a replacement. If they do offer a replacement, they're going further than the law requires.

When I take it back to EB, do I need to bring all the cables and the controller as well, or will they be happy with just the console? I hope they don't try to fix this one and give it back to me, because I'll never trust it again no matter what. It's the most trouble I've ever had with a console. Even 360 allowed me a few years before the rrod.

They damn well better give me replacement or I'll make a scene...

It'd probably be safest to bring everything, but if that's inconvenient you could try calling the store first.

You might be able to sweet talk your way into a replacement, but just keep in mind that they are not required to give you one. The ACL is great for dealing with uncooperative retailers, but if they are already meeting their obligations threatening them probably won't help in the long run. In the case of minor faults, it is retailer's choice of how to resolve the problem. They're more likely to pick the option you want if you're a respectful customer rather than an arsehole.
