You reach a point in the plot where the government plan on bombing the city you're in to rid of the infection, using the lie that there are no survivors left. Unable to contact the outside world, the survivors hatch a plan to get the message out: set off explosions in an apartment tower in a pattern that would let the world know they're still alive. This leads to a long mission where you go through the tower, risking your life against a hundred zombies to place the bombs in the appropriate apartments. When you're done you exit through the sewers and trek a long distance away to see the results of the explosion. What does it say? "HELP"? "SOS"? No. Spoiler: click to toggle

The funny thing is that the government recognize the threat immediately and airstrike the tower ten seconds later, meaning you don't accomplish jack shit. The real letdown though is it's got one of those villains who instead of just shooting you sets up convoluted traps and rants about how chaos is the true order of things. The plot was pretty neat until he showed up. Edited by Moo, Feb 1 2017, 05:07 PM.

Man, I tried to start playing Assassin's Creed Syndicate and was repulsed by how finicky the controls are and how stale the gameplay has gotten. After playing Dying Light, where you bounce off zombie heads and race up walls to get around, and Arkham Knight, the movement and climbing in Syndicate is painfully restrictive, not just because of the controls but the difficult-to-define stealth mechanics that make navigation a chore. The only thing I like is the Victorian setting. I'll at least play until I can run around the streets of London, but so far I'm not impressed. I hope they're giving the series a Resi 7 makeover because the current format has been done to death. Edited by Moo, Feb 3 2017, 01:46 PM.

I enjoyed AC: Syndicate, but I can see the flaws you mention. When I played, I guess my main point of comparison was Unity. Yes the combat was essentially a simplified version of Batman's, but it was a lot more fun than the slow and clunky combat from its predecessor. It also had likeable protagonists who seemed to be enjoying themselves, which helped me care a bit more about the story. One thing that did disappoint me was that the landmarks felt smaller in scale than in Unity. I never attempted to measure this though, so maybe this was just down the the grappling hook causing me to spend less time climbing. And like Unity, they were clearly using some form of procedural generation to help fill in the map. It is better than the cut and paste buildings and trees from AC3, but still detracts from the game a bit. As far as the next game in the series goes, the leaks seem to indicate that it will be set in ancient Egypt. That will effectively hit the reset switch on the weapons they've been introducing over the last nine iterations in the series (firearms in particular). There's also rumours that it has borrowed ideas from The Witcher 3. Hopefully they've spent some of the year off to decide what they want to do with the series ongoing storyline too: it's basically been in a holding pattern since AC3 in 2012. |

I hope they put the series' story as far into the background as possible. It's as lame as Resident Evil's, but RE's is so bad it's good while AC's is simply boring. Syndicate's first scene mentions Apples of Eden and Templars and I was already groaning. A newcomer would have no clue what anyone is talking about. I'm guessing borrowing ideas from TW3 means telling engrossing stories through sidequests or separating the main story into a bunch of little dramas that overlap. Egypt's a good choice, but goddamn it, they're going to turn Caesar vs. Cleopatra into Templars vs. Assassins, you know they will. |

I guess I'm one of those weird people that actually enjoys the framing story in Assassin's Creed. I went into the first game with no expectations (the game was bundled with my PS3), and enjoyed the bits where you're trying to piece together what the deal is with your captors and how it relates to the action in the past. I also liked the way how Desmond playing all the way through to Altair's victory basically meant a win for the bad guys in the present. AC2 did a good job expanding it in the glyph puzzles, that unlocked documents hinting at the conspiracy affecting various pivotal points in history, leading up to the reveal of the first civilisation. The writing for the framing story went down hill a bit with the later games, to the point where it was mostly non-existent in the last few. But just because they haven't been telling compelling stories with it recently doesn't mean interesting stories can't be told. If they're not going to do anything with the framing story, I guess getting rid of it might be an improvement, but I'd prefer if they took a chance and tried to do something interesting. Either pick up the "Juno AI loose on the Internet" angle, or perhaps something to do with the first civilisation in the past could work. |

The only part of the main story I liked was Ezio in AC2 and Brotherhood (I hardly remember Revelations). He was refreshingly fun after the drudgery of Desmond and Altair and was surrounded by a good cast of characters in the Borgias, Leo da Vinci and Machiavelli. If I recall, the Eden/Juno stuff mostly takes place in Desmond's sections and is ancillary in Ezio's, which is focused on his revenge and personal growth. I love the framing device for AC (accessing history through genetic memory), which has so much potential if it can break from the shackles of the lame Illuminati fantasy. Imagine the crazy stuff Hideo Kojima would dream up with that premise. That said, a god invading the Internet could be fun. |

Started Lego City Undercover, its essentially GTA with LEGO and its the first LEGO game that I have played with a legitimate story and chapters. Im playing the Wii U version and it makes nice use of the gamepad. Problem is the loading times, when you enter a new environment its quite a lengthy wait. Feels like the 90's again. Unsure if its a Wii U thing or the game itself. Would be interested to see how the ports being released on every other platform handles the game both with loading and lack of the gamepad. Some decent references in the game though, loved the Shawshank Redemption moment. |

I liked the story in AC1. The Desmond bits were genuinely mysterious and intriguing. I was kinda interested in AC2 as well, though it was getting a bit childish, and I don't actually remember any of Ezio's tale (something about the pope being an evil Templar or some shit?). In Black Flag, I enjoyed the minimalism of the future bits, and went along with the pirate stuff. At least it made me read up on the golden age of piracy on Wikipedia. I finished The Last of Us. Great game. The ending was nicely ambiguous, though maybe they made Joel too much of a brute to empathise with at all in the end. Next up is Left Behind, which I'm looking forward to downloading on ps4. Edited by Sir Goodfellow, Feb 4 2017, 03:57 PM.

What I love about TLOU is how by nature of being a videogame protagonist Joel seems like a good guy, but the story slowly peels back the veneer to show he's basically a sociopath, or at least an extremely broken guy who'll do terrible things to seal over the hole his daughter's death left in his life. In retrospect there's nothing he does that doesn't benefit him in some way, and there are so many hints of his true nature, like the tense reunion with his brother and how he's blissfully chatting away to Ellie without noticing her attempted rape has left her traumatized. |

I finished it as well, was going to suggest you also play the DLC. It's not particularly long but it fills in the gaps of the main story and Ellie before she met Joel. |

Was there an actual attempt of rape? I mean it was suggested that it was a possibility when Ellie was captured but I dont recall any actual physical attempts towards it. Closest I can think of was in the restaurant but she had already stabbed the dude so many times and he was trying to kill her not rape her. Did I miss something? I agree with Joel, I actually think that he did make the selfish decision at the end. If there was no virus and just say the world is how it is today and Ellie could cure Aids or something like that I could kind of understand because although its a nasty disease the world is still decent overall, but the world was doomed in the game and it was because of the virus. |

Yeah you're right. It's clear the guy is a pedo in the cage scene but he is trying to kill her later on. She's still traumatised by the ordeal nevertheless.
