Im not sure if I like the world design of The Witness. While it's cool how the game naturally directs you to puzzle areas through clear paths and distant landmarks. I wish it communicated some order, approached 'tutorial puzzle' placement more elegantly or at least not put the town so close to the start point and the swamp far into the corner of the island. Just from looking around at the wave of people playing it right now, alot of people seems to have strolled into the town and got butthurt at the game. I do think the open world design has provided some fantastic eureka moments that had me discovering a rule, relationship or parameter before an area introduced it. It's just that had I just completed--well, absolutely destroyed--the swamp area that is located in a deep corner of the map. Doing that area just felt like such an unsatisfying throwaway because I had already solved much harder or more interesting puzzles utilizing that areas' core rule. |

The area that annoyed me the most is sorta in the middle, like a river with rocky shores where you can see a whole heap of stuff directly ahead of you but can't cross the river, so you have to navigate the jungle and a bunch of other shit to get there. |

I haven't played The Witness in nearly a year and at this point it's probably too late to go back unless I start over again, which doesn't sound fun at all. |

The mouth of the river has rocks you can walk across. Though it would be nice if the game had a jump button... |

Excited to see RE7 is getting rave reviews. I'm definitely getting it. I haven't played since RE4 because the other two looked shit. |

I must be the only person who enjoyed RE6, I mean do not get me wrong that it was easily the worst in the series but I still had a good time playing it. Played all 4 campaigns as well. RE2 still my favourite, hope the HD version is still being released. Rumour is its included as a demo with RE7. RE7 I am actually less hyped about because it does not look like an RE game whatsoever. Where is the connection to the series? Some people may argue its necessary to reboot the series all together and I kind of agree but you can still include the past content and storyline. I downloaded the demo and havent touched it yet and read very little on it, perhaps there will be an connection so lets just see. |

The demo's atmosphere was neat. Unfortunately it's got the same obtuse "puzzles" as the P.T. demo that require online walkthroughs to get the proper ending. My enjoyment quickly lead to frustration. I doubt it's representative of the gameplay though. I'm very glad of the story reboot because, frankly, Resident Evil's story was stupid from the get-go and only got worse in each iteration (it is endearingly stupid though). Apparently it does take place in the same world and this will become clearer over time, but they wanted to try things from a fresh perspective. |

I bought it and played for about three hours. In terms of gameplay it's basically first person early Resident Evil, though a little light on puzzles so far. The story is unlike any game in the series in terms of tone - it's strongly influenced by American horror tropes, and the dialogue and written notes are a marked step up in quality, and not just because there hasn't been a laughable line yet. I've only seen one offhand reference to the series lore and I'm curious how it'll tie in and how MUCH it'll tie in, because it's seriously a world away from Umbrella superconspiracy territory right now. The horror is pretty much what I expected it to be; I loudly went 'fuck!' at one jump scare, and was caught by some others, but it's not the kind of horror that sticks with you long after. It's not quite on level with the brilliantly eerie aesthetic of REmake's mansion, but is probably the scariest RE after that. |

RE5 wasn't terrible, but it pissed me off that there were only a couple of middling puzzles in the entire game and that it didn't even try to be a horror. It was just a shooter with slightly wonky controls and a frustratingly dim NPC that you have to escort through the whole game. Come to think of it, it's the only RE game I've ever finished. I was always more of a Silent Hill man (with good reason - it used to be a far superior series and SH1 is a timeless masterpiece) . But yeah, I got hopelessly stuck in RE1 on PS1 (wasn't even a puzzle, I simply didn't know where to go to advance the game), I couldn't be bothered with RE2 beyond the first hour or two, and lost interest about a quarter through RE3. I really wanna try 4. Edited by Sir Goodfellow, Jan 25 2017, 05:23 PM.

Eh, REmake is better than 4 in my book. A lot of games copied 4's ideas so it won't feel as fresh as it did back then. |

Goodfellow if you played RE5 already, I agree with Moo that RE4 wont be as enjoyable for you. RE5 was essentially RE4 with more action and a co op mode added, obviously with better graphics as well. You have already mentioned how you could not get through the older 3 games and RE4 although was the first in the series to cut the fixed camera and control mechanics to become more fast paced. It seems like you are more attracted to the action component rather than survivor horror elements of the series. Fuck I would probably recommend RE6 instead. 4 is the only one I've played all the way through or really liked at all. I think I've tried 2 and 3 a couple of times over the years, and it's just impossible for me to enjoy fixed camera angle games that have real time combat. 5 had the same problem as Fallout 4 that it felt instantaneously stale and boring to me. I never tried 6 since everyone shits on it and I'm not a fan of the series anyway so who cares. 7 looks "fresh" for the series but it doesn't really look all that different from stuff like Outlast, Alien Isolation etc. so there's a decent chance I'll likely never play it either. We'll see. Edited by Doomguy, Jan 25 2017, 05:50 PM.

I liked Outlast, but aside from a similar style of horror RE7 plays very differently. It's essentially to REmake what Metroid Prime is to Super Metroid. I think people were inevitably going to call it Let's Play bait because it's in the horror genre, but I've played it and it's a league above. |

I'm actually more attracted to the horror elements. The first game was the only one I really got into because of the spooky atmosphere, so it annoyed me a lot when I couldn't work out how to progress (no online walkthroughs in those days or I wasn't aware of them). I still remember the immense frustration of walking around the mansion for hours trying every door and room over and over again. I definitely would have finished that one if I knew how. Then I played Silent Hill (still the scariest game of all time) and could never take RE seriously again. But whatever, I actually downloaded RE4 about 2 years ago and keep thinking I should at least give it a try... Edited by Sir Goodfellow, Jan 26 2017, 08:57 AM.
