Out of the consoles, I honestly think both the PS3/360 has the most impressive game libraries. Mostly thanks to how long of a life cycle they had. Just think about all the games from 2005-2015 plus the boom of downloadable titles from 2008. I mean, it got games right up to Rise of the Tomb Raider and MGSV right down to Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, CoD2 and Curtdogg's favourite ESIV: Oblivion. I'd put the PS2 behind that, so many gems on that thing and it had such a diverse library. Personally, the DS and SNES top the Ninty devices when it comes to their library. Those are among my favourites. I did them early and they produced my first HOLY FUCK moment. Whenever I hit a wall I just go do another area, or even just stop playing for a few minutes, and come back later with a fresh mind. It seems to help. Edited by Moo, Jan 17 2017, 09:20 PM.

I've played enough Myst to know that you shouldnt be stubborn and just leave a puzzle and then come back. I've looked at that one like 3 times, thought I had the solution where the mazes mirror the other side with the floor panels but it didnt seem to add up? |

What floors me about The Witness (and also The Talos Principle) is how much testing must have gone into ensuring that some of the more difficult or obscure puzzles could be solved by puzzle laymen like myself. Sorta related: I recently played Hexcells, which is kinda like Minesweeper except that the setups are meticulously crafted so you can always logically figure out where the "mines" are. It starts off simple and becomes increasingly complex. A pleasant little brain tickler. |

Like ben, I also had the feeling that N64 had hardly any games. To be fair, I hadn't even heard of Zelda at the time (that was before I started obsessively trawling the internet for games information), but I only ever had a handful of games for it, and in the end, only turned it on to play mario kart and extreme g multiplayer. I still remember the system fondly, but probably only because it was my first 'proper' console and had goldeneye. I had a Sega Master System and the final Atari before it, but those were fucking shit. It wasn't until I got PS1 that I fully got into gaming. That was a great console, but my prime gaming experiences were mostly on the original xbox. I guess I was at the right age when I had it and everything just clicked. There were a lot of great games on that beast. Mostly multiplats and pc ports, but I didn't care about that back then. Edited by Sir Goodfellow, Jan 18 2017, 10:17 AM.

I can imagine the play-testing behind Portal/Portal 2 would have been alot more rigorous. Because you're forced to take a puzzle one after the other without having to have your brain reset - you're pretty much stuck on that puzzle and it's a mass marketed game that still comes across as a clever puzzle game. But I prefer this format of TTP/The Witness, even Antichamber and The Swapper. I think the world and structure design allows these games to really amp up the difficulty and put engaging simpler puzzles in between to jog your thinking and help you feel like you're progressing. It's probably the unfortunate reason behind those boring stretches between puzzles in Portal 2 where you're just aiming for white space to get to the next puzzle. One thing though, I'm not sure if I like the open world design of the Witness, at least compared to TTP's little hubs, signs and directional lighting. I'm probably gonna dread running slowly between puzzles later on in the game when there are only a few left. You should check out Stephen's Sausage Roll, supposedly it's a really good Puzzle game also. Havent seen it for cheaper than it is now though. Been looking to get it myself. |
