Get him red faction guerrilla for 360, should be cheap as fuck nowadays. It's not especially violent at all (does have shooting though, so judge accordingly), and the building destruction would've entertained me endlessly at that age.

Been playing FF15 and I really wanna like but... but it just feels so poorly put together! Lot's of great ideas but poorly executed - also a LOT of boring ass driving around waiting to arrive at map markers. Think I might just press on with the story (which is interesting) and ignore all the open world bits |

From what I've read it sounds even more disappointingly unfinished than MGS5. At least that game's highs are really really high. |

Until people stop complaining about game length and define what constitutes a $60 game. |

I've honestly become disinterested and to a lesser extent intimidated by really long games now. I just don't have the time for them anymore in most cases, and even less of them are good enough for me to spend that much time on. I prefer shorter sweeter stuff now. Only special stuff like Witcher 3 earns a play if it's long. |

It's odd how Mario 64 heralded a non-stop avalanche of cute 3D platformers based around item collection and then they all disappeared to the point that Yooka-Laylee is a nostalgia trip. I don't get why they stopped getting made because the well-made ones are still fun to play. Edit: I forgot about the Galaxy games, but based on 3D World Nintendo seem to be leaning towards making Mario a more linear + multiplayer affair. I played it in multiplayer and it was good fun, but I think single player would be very lacklustre. The Galaxy games are my favourite platformers ever. Edited by Moo, Dec 26 2016, 11:06 PM.

In other news, I finished Duke 3D recently. Twas a good game, aged pretty well (playing the megaton edition probably helps). I've gone straight on to Shadow Warrior to give that a second chance, and I'm enjoying it way more this time around. Should hopefully help me be able to get into the reboot and it's sequel. |

It surely can't be any worse than FF13, which was the absolute pits. I still like open world games. The world has to be open. There's no going back in that respect. I've come to resent excessively linear games. I don't think I can ever play another call of duty (but wow, 4 was incredibly awesome. Dat explosion...) |

I still like open worlds. It's just developers arent making good ones. They create this big map and just vomit activity markers on them to fit some content quota and turning the open world into a checklist. It doesnt help that most of the modern ones arent all that mechanically fun to maneuver around because they're so strung up on retaining some AAA presentation quality. I've been playing Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen on and off for the past year. It has a small open world, but it's so fun to explore. Open fields, sporadically placed locales and a map that just feels natural in a way that doesnt turn the core explorative game loop into a clinical checklist. It helps that movement in that game is so fucking tight. It also ties management mechanics (fatigue, lighting, night time dangers) to give the game this sense of adventure that gives its small world so much legs when just going from A to B. Not that the modern open world formula cant be done right. Rise of the Tomb Raider and Batman: Arkham City probably got the balance right. Open spaces, optional activities to do to pace the game between its tighter controlled encounters and the means in traversing around is just generally fun with bitchin controls. |

Correction: I got Enter the Gungeon, not Darkest Dungeon. It definitely gives Isaac a run for its money. The aiming is more precise and you can actually see a full map layout. Digging it. |

The tutorial guy in Enter the Gungeon > Your favorite character of 2016. But for some reason, I really suck at Enter the Gungeon. Avoiding bullets isnt a problem, I've not never gotten used to twin stick type kinda gameplay. Me being pretty bad at Geometry Wars completely checks out here. |

I can't get past the third floor yet. Also I've failed every single time against the king boss on the spiky throne. Another thing it has over Isaac is that it has an inventory that explains what items do. That's actually the most annoying thing about Isaac: you collect so many things where you have no idea what they're doing for you. My only complaint is that it lags too much when a lot is happening on screen, even with the graphics on low. Weird for a SNES looking game. EDIT: It's cause it was set to play on my laptop's shitty GPU, not the good one. Also I beat the king boss!!! Edited by Moo, Dec 29 2016, 05:49 PM.

I played through ABZÛ. The game just felt like an exercise in side-tracking around doors with controls that felt more cumbersome than it was ever pleasant. I still found it rather captivating, but the interactions within the game just lacked that cool sense of engagement that Journey provided with that mingling aspect it had. Might move on to play Inside next. I quite liked Limbo, particularly the 2nd half of the game even though it wasnt really as challenging as I would have liked.
