I'm up to the last two bosses in Xenoblade and want to keep the JRPG train going so I started Blue Dragon, which I bought and played once 7 years ago and never touched again. I couldn't remember it and expected a cliché, boring trod, but surprisingly it's good. The cinematic direction is excellent, with cutscenes playing almost like animated films. The voices fit the cartoony style, while the look is pleasant and has hardly aged. The turn-based battles are textbook, which is fine, and there are no random encounters. The story is undoubtedly for a younger audience, but I feel I might enjoy it like I enjoy Pixar films. It's not pretentious and hamfisted like a lot of RPGs are.

Furi has quick, satisfying arcade-style combat but it sucks when you die near the end of a battle and need to start again. Earlier phases become rote quickly and it sucks the fun out of playing. I don't think I have the patience for it. Otherwise it's decent. |

I played a bit more dark souls on the weekend. I'm getting into it now. When I played it last year I got up to the Taurus Demon and gave up. It took me a few tries but then I just did my usual thing with difficult game parts and took a break for a few minutes. Came back calm and collected and defeated him pretty easily. I'm up to the bell tower boss now. I died when the second one came along (fuck that guy) and then died like an idiot on my way there to a couple of low rank enemies that I had gone through twenty times before that. Lost 6000 souls (which at this stage I believe is a lot) and a chunk of my ego and quit. That game hurts real good. |

The gargoyles killed me more than any other boss on my first playthrough. They're a huge spike in difficulty. Hang in there. |

A good rule of thumb in dark souls (and I do very much mean that it's a rule of thumb, because you'll get blown the fuck out in certain circumstances with this) is that closer is safer than further away. A lot of bosses are pretty exploitable by just running circles around their close proximity or ducking in and out of their legs. It makes dodging directional attacks a lot easier in some parts. |

I tend to hang back with my shield up and wait for them to perform a strong attack where they're left open for a couple of seconds and then I hit once or twice and get back. Usually works. I tried staying close to the Taurus demon the first time but couldn't time the dodges well enough. I'll keep it in mind for future bosses though. Just remembered I found the blacksmith near the church and after speaking i went to see what was through the door next to him. Immediately greeted by a giant fucked up scorpion thing that was shooting electricity at me. Noped right the fuck out of there. Seems like a bad place to set up shop. |

I put Blue Dragon aside for now in favour of FFXII. I played about half of it over a long time a few years ago, mostly in a drunken state so I can barely remember it. My "first" impression is that the dialogue is mostly very good. It's nicely restrained, never jarring, and people talk like people. There's an early political speech delivered to angry citizens that believably sways them to the politician's side and is ambiguous enough to make it unclear whether the politician is a villain or not. The CGI scenes are remarkably well directed: the game opens with an eye-opening battle scene, and again the speech scene is probably one of the best directed scenes I've seen in a game. I hope the story holds up because I remember getting lost in the political machinations last time and not even knowing who some characters are. I was drunk though. The combat is fun but more fiddly and less smooth than Xenoblade, which obviously was inspired by FFXII. Two of Xenoblade's brilliant touches are having party members always auto-attack unless commanded otherwise, and getting rid of healing items and just regenerating health after a fight. The AI is cleverer and don't need much navigation either. While I'm at it, weaker Xenoblade enemies won't bother you as you walk by but here they're a nuisance that nip at your heels. Regardless, it holds up quite well and I'm enjoying it. The world seems delightfully huge too. At this rate it could become my favourite FF. Edited by Moo, Jul 12 2016, 09:27 PM.

So I bought nu-Doom/Doom4/Doom'16/DOOM yesterday and have been playing it on and off this afternoon and evening. I'm really enjoying this, I had concerns going in but they're gradually washing away as I'm having a blast. The thing that made me buy it was that I heard about the Vulkan update and the classic weapon. The latter ended up not really being all that great, but the former is very nice. I'm very impressed with how well it's running. |

I really love how there's no set point where you get a weapon for the first time, you can find them early off the beaten path. Much doom, wow. |

I can't believe how good Final Fantasy 12 is. By the laws of modern-day JRPGs it shouldn't be this good. I can't believe it came after 10, which is a sappy, idiotic, pretentious cringe-fest (with decent combat), and precedes 13, which looks like trite. I place 9 on a pedestal above the other FFs I've played, but nostalgia is probably clouding my judgement a bit, and 12 could definitely take its place. I'd put it up there with Chrono Trigger and Mother 2 & 3. |

I really wished I like jRPGs because I'm sure I'm missing out on some gems. |

Is Frank real or are bots liking posts? I don't get why you'd care about gems if the genre doesn't interest you. Unless you mean it's hard to figure out which ones you might enjoy because the definition of "good" for fans and reviewers isn't your definition of good, which I understand. Do yourself a fave and play Paper Mario 2. It's the most accessible gem I can think of. Edited by Moo, Jul 15 2016, 11:43 PM.
