Started on Stories: Path of Destinies last night and am quite enjoying it. It's not really all that difficult yet, but it's simple fun. Looks damn nice too.

It's a scam that Sony and Microsoft don't let you choose to disable auto-renewal when buying a subscription.

I got a month of Xbox Live for $1 so I can play Dark Souls 1 & 2. Shame that the free games are bad, except maybe Costume Quest 2.

A bunch of people who refuse to play the Soulsborne series probably tried Dark Souls first. Playing it again, it's really rough in comparison to Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3, with camera, environment and AI issues that can result in you getting screwed by its inefficiency rather than you screwing yourself with your own. It's made me appreciate how far From Software have come in shearing off those rough edges. Bloodborne and DS3 are to DS1 what Mario Galaxy is to Mario 64. Difficulty-wise I still wouldn't recommend Bloodborne, the hardest game in the series in my book, but DS3 is as inviting as this series has ever been, and there's even the option to make it easier by summoning players into your world for help.

Anyway, Dark Souls is looking old these days, despite holding up very well. Its successors have improved upon virtually everything, with the exception of the fascinating world layout. I can only think of one instance in later games (specificially, the room before Ebrietas in Bloodborne) where you unexpectedly find yourself returned to somewhere you've been before. There's nothing like realizing that Darkroot Basin is directly beneath the Undead Parish, or that the Undead Parish is directly above Firelink Shrine. The series has gotten quite linear.

Regardless, despite none of my experiences with future games matching the incalculable thrill of playing Dark Souls for the first time, I'm dethroning it as my favourite game ever and replacing it with Bloodborne.

I don't think I've come across any subscription services that do let you disable auto-renewal. None that I can think of right now anyway.

I will one day get back to Dark Souls. I have 4 hours on it according to Steam, though I don't remember playing it for that long. I was enjoying it, just stopped for no reason.

I've been thinking about it a bit lately and some of the core concepts of it. Maybe I read too many articles about it back when it was new that were gushing so much. A few things stood out to me as odd.

Like speaking about it as some revolutionary thing that it 'teaches' you when you die. To me, games have always done that. Most good games will make it feel like you did something wrong rather than it being the game's fault that you died. I've never understood why that makes the Souls games special.

Another thing is the obscurity of some of the game's systems and even the complexity of the game's menus. I don't get why that didn't get called out, or perhaps some of that complexity is overstated.

I also don't get the idea of summoning other players. Why would you want somebody to help you with a boss? Especially if it's your first time going up against it? Do bosses even scale to multiple players? Doesn't it just become a squash?

I know I don't have to summon. It just seems weird to have this game known for it's difficulty have an option to make it easy.

I dunno, this stuff has bothered me for a while, maybe some of you could shed some light on it. Maybe I could also just shut the fuck up and play the game and figure it out, but that's not as fun as talking shit about a popular thing.

It's not that Souls is unique in teaching you through experience rather than explanations, but that it does it so well. It makes the player feel like success arises from their growing skill and ability to adapt when their methods aren't working. The thing is, the game does have a Zelda-style tutorial of sorts, but whereas Zelda will introduce new enemies to explain new mechanics via text, Dark Souls prompts you towards the mechanic by showing, for example, that enemies with shields can't just be hacked to pieces like previous enemies and require something more, so when the player finally figures out that you need to either circle around them or kick them backwards, it's because of their own thinking and it feels nice. Compound that feeling when you finally defeat a piece of shit boss: the sense of accomplishment and relief that arises is why people love Dark Souls.

The menus are bad though. It also has some dumb design decisions, like being forced to consume souls individually (because you will usually consume a dozen at a time and there's a five-second animation each time you do). Menus improved in subsequent games.

I don't summon on first playthroughs, but being summoned is a lot of fun. One of my favourite memories of the game was summoning someone to help me with a boss fight that takes place in an endless hallway; the two of us running down it together while dodging the boss' projectiles and racing to attack him was a blast, and it definitely wasn't easy. Some people just prefer the multiplayer, which changes the dynamic of fights somewhat, but rarely makes them a walk in the park. Bosses do scale depending on the number of players.

Speaking of talking shit about a popular thing, it's funny seeing self-imposed anti-mainstream contrarians turn on Dark Souls now that it's gone mainstream. There's this specific niche of reviewers who compulsively despise anything acclaimed by other reviewers, and they often subject games to their idiotic social condemnation. The dumbest thing I read anywhere is that Bloodborne is a marketing ploy that uses gratuitous blood and violence to pull in Grand Theft Auto fans, and for the same reason the Doll NPC is sexualised. Regarding the latter, you'd need to be pretty hung-up to find anything sexual about the Doll.

Ah I think I may have missed that detail about the game teaching you things. I still feel like there are plenty of other games that do that. But then again there are far too many games that have somebody tell you on your radio that you need to shoot the guys glowy parts before you can kill him. So I can understand that it's a refreshing concept mixed with other positive aspects that boosts everything up.

Summoning sounds totally solid then. If I do ever get through the first playthrough let alone even starting a second one, then I will try it.

I'm glad to hear that the menus are actually poorly designed and it's not just the game 'teaching' you how to use it's crappy menu system. That's all okay then. Thanks for explaining.

And yeah, I did like my time with it and I've even watched probably about 10 hours in total worth of gameplay of Dark Souls and Demon's Souls. I think the games look a great deal of fun, but the gameplay videos may have been where some of my misconceptions came from.

A lot of anti Dark Souls sentiment probably came about when the first one was released, as the Demon's Souls fans thought it was too mainstream.

I look forward to contrarians becoming mainstream trend followers when being a contrarian becomes sufficiently popular.

I picked up Shovel Knight on PS4 at Target the other day and replaying it again after going through a couple of times on the 3DS. Man, I'm playing this so much better on a proper controller than I did on the 3DS. Nothing against the 3DS, but I find it really difficult to play with extended play, especially for platformers. Anyhow, Shovel Knight is bloody good.

Despite what I said Dark Souls showing its age, I did the Knight Artorias fight last night and it's still the best boss in the series. I'd been cheesing my way through the game with a buffed up weapon, but it's impossible to cheese this fight, since wailing away at the boss results in him wailing in return and there's about a minute between the brief downtimes where you can safely drink Estus. It also punishes defending over evading attacks since Artorias will likely deplete your stamina with a single hit, breaking your poise. It's just a straight up test of your skills. Gold standard.

Also, I'm surprised the 360 version of the game is still so populated. I had to take off the Cat Covenant Ring because I was being summoned to defend the forest every minute. I tried invasions in random areas like Oolacile Township and got multiple hits. The only thing I haven't seen is a summon sign.
