made by some Polish company.
Not sure if jking or srs
I was serious, what's the problem?
Many people consider them (cdprojekt) the second coming of christ in the Pee Sthee Mathtur Rathe due to their fairly consumer friendly approach to business with free and high value DLC, no DRM, regional pricing on GOG (They also don't lock their releases away from Steam to make it exclusive to their own platform like EA do with lolrigin) etc.

And of course some people are rabid fanboys of their games.

Sorry I thought you meant that The Witcher 3 and the first two games were made by separate companies. So I thought you were just being funny in some way that I didn't get.

I have also only played like half of the first game and nothing of the others, so I wouldn't call myself a fan of theirs, although I did like what I played of the first game a lot and think their business practices are extremely admirable in the current era of the video games industry.

But anyway, carry on.

I also just realised that NMan was talking about the industry in general. I am way off today.

That Call of Cthulhu game is on Steam and is old as shit. Do you have an old laptop or something?

Yeah, I forgot about Steam. My laptop is about 18 months to 2 years old now, but it should be more than adequate for CoC(k). Might download it if I ever get around to it. Then again, it's a pretty long game and hard as shit, so maybe my enthusiasm for replaying it is only illusory. I'd probably play the first hour or two before giving up. You should play it though! It's good, and not even all that dated. The graphics weren't top-shelf even in 2005, but it's all about the dank and foreboding atmosphere; this disconcerting feeling of creeping psychotic dread that it pulls off so well. And anyway, it still looks better than Deadly Premonition, which came out relatively recently and is close to my favourite game of last gen. I can't believe I forgot about DP when listing the gems! An awesome, one-of-a-kind game.

And damn you, dave. You had me going with 'Kojima and Del Toro directing the new Silent Hill', only to immediately let me down :(.

hahaha yeah I was going for maximum dickage the way I wrote that. This was the teaser game:

It's probably better to watch than play honestly. After a while the scariness was replaced by frustration for me because there's a bunch of out-of-the-box Kojima nonsense you need to do to reach the end. But the atmosphere filled me with so much dread in the early going. I can only imagine how good it would've been as a full length game.

I might give it a try next time there's a sale. I'm a total pussy when it comes to games though. Don't have a problem with horror films (not that I watch many) but I think the immersion in games makes me get creeped out way easier. And then I couldn't even watch a playthrough of P.T. so I dunno. I like the look of it though.

Reminds me a bit of a point and click game that came out last year. I don't remember the name of it but it had a dark and disturbing atmosphere to it that got me interested.

Edit: It's called Stasis. Looks neat.

Do they even make full budget boxed games that aren't sure-fire franchise hits anymore? I used to like discovering imperfect but interesting gems like Spec Ops: The Line, or Call of Cthulhu, or Alpha Protocol, or even Dreamfall and Remember Me, but pleasant surprises like that seem to have all but disappeared this gen. Now it's all either these quirky little indie games, episodic hits that get parceled out in little chunks (which annoys me), franchise big-hitters,or MP extravaganzas. Or at least that's how it seems to me. I haven't heard of anything that genuinely interests me in ages, though I haven't been following the latest trends in gaming for quite a long while now, so maybe I am missing something.

PS. Oh, I do wanna play After Dawn though! That one sounds pretty cool.
There's still a middle ground there in the retail space, but nothing along the lines of what you're after. What seems left with the middle ground full-priced space are either Japanese stuff or PC Strategy games/Simulators.

But there are 'indie games' that arent small or quirky, are appropriately priced and are worthy to fit in that space.

Look up:
SOMA
The Talos Principle
Life is Strange
Stasis
Pillars of Eternity
Wasteland 2
D4: Dark Dreams Dont Die
Blues & Bullets

I second Soma! It's a great game that's well worthwhile playing and is standalone as well.

I've only just started playing Pillars of Eternity but I recommend that if you don't mind a complex RPG.

It's pretty funny how similar The Witness' style is to The Talos Principle's. I'm playing it now and except for the puzzles themselves it's like déjà vu, with you walking through the tranquil remains of a lost and abstract civilization while picking up audio tapes that quote philosophy. I'm assuming they're both influenced by Myst (I've never played it) but it's strange that they were released only a year apart and are so alike. This doesn't detract from The Witness though. It looks and sounds beautiful.

It's pretty excellent so far. I still haven't encountered the moment everyone talks about that changez everything, or if I did I mustn't have been wowed by it. I was proud when I figured out a puzzle mechanic before reaching the "tutorial" puzzle explaining it. It's good at giving you those little triumphant bursts of heroin like Talos. I've encountered one puzzle just now that looks infuriatingly simple but I can't figure it out. It's rad that you can just walk away and do a dozen other things in the meantime.

Edit: officially just reached my first puzzle where the solution is pure genius that challenges your imagination. Someone should tell Tim Schafer this is how abstract puzzles are supposed to work.

I'm already resigned to the fact I won't be 100%ing The Witness. I'll try to beat the base game without a walkthrough but I'm stumbling all over the island here, to the point where I can't even grasp what some tutorial puzzles are trying to teach me. It's not like Talos Principle's star "puzzles": it all seems governed by logic, but logic beyond my capabilities. I have encountered one puzzle that's ludicrous though. Just a simple idea made shittily masochistic by a dumb twist. The amount of areas I've left for later might outweigh the unvisited areas at this point...

Anyway, I still recommend it a lot. But I might prefer Talos Principle's more insular nature.

The first episode was okay but things picked up later in the 2nd episode. The 3rd one is clearly the best so far, the last part of it is a big surprise. Need to the do 4th and 5th episodes.

Started on Pokemon Y last night. For some reason I had said I'd bought Pokemon X, but actually I'd grabbed Y. Don't particularly know what the difference is to be honest.

It's been a good... ten years? since I played a Pokemon game. Last one I played was Pokemon Yellow (I think) which I thoroughly enjoyed. It's great to get back into it as it's not really changed all that much - mostly just a visual make over with new Pokemon to catch. A lot of fun and really quite addictive. Glad it's given me a reason to jump back into my 3DS as it's been a while since I turned it on.
