I thought I wouldn't care for Xenoblade Chronicles based on the first two hours, because the story is cliche and the combat felt too complex. Five hours in, the story is still cliche but is punctuated by excellent scenes, and the combat is exhilarating fun. It's the first Final Fantasy-ish RPG I've played in a few years, and despite the trappings of the genre I definitely like it. What I love is how the graphics aren't very good but the world design still gives you a grand sense of scope. In that regard I love how the trails surrounding Colony 9 coil around and above it, as well as Bionis' Leg.

The game world in Xenoblade Chronicles is great. I like the game for its seamless and engaging combat the most, it feels incredibly active, responsive and vibrant with some twits to the usual roles that you can customize and play around with. If you think the story is Cliche already, wait till you reach the games' 2nd half where you persevere a greater evil through co-operation and friendship. |

Just played through the first episode of Tales of the Borderlands. It was really great. The plotting is probably the best Telltale has done and I like that it winds back to its comedic roots which I loved Sam & Max The Devils Playhouse for. The structure is still predictable, with dialogue choices QTEs where you press directional buttons, spam buttons and grab stuff on screen. The world exposition/atmosphere is nowhere near how strong it is in Life Is Strange. But I like how the choices you have are less about this or that, live or die, but more about the tone you want to set for your story and characters. A few references aside, I dont think you have to be into Borderlands franchise to enjoy it. |

It is awesome, far better than the Walking Dead games. Episode 5 was actually the best of the episodes. It is my personal favourite game this year. I found the story and characters far better than the main games and want to see them in the 3rd Borderlands game. The only annoying thing is the cut scenes which can freeze badly (all the console versions suffer from it, not sure about PC). |

I think the general structure of the Borderlands FPS prevents the game from having script on par with the Telltale episodic stuff. |

I would like to see them allow you to have bots in place of humans so you always have 4 people playing. I completed the 1st and 2nd game solo (2 playthroughs each) but it was much more enjoyable when I played online with others. Another cool thing would be able to switch between vault hunters on the go but they won't do that. |

Borderlands is pretty doo-doo. Especially the 2nd one. It's only more fun with others because the scaling of those games are completely terrible when it comes to its bland quests and how encounters/exploration is paced with just yourself. Even with 2 people it can be abit of a grind/drag. Edited by Red Panda, Nov 6 2015, 06:44 PM.

I'm already getting that vibe. I'm digging the super unnecessary exposition too, like when Shulk, witnessing Otharion's impending death that he saw in a vision, has a flashback to a moment thirty minutes earlier when Reyn said "We can change the future together" and then it cuts back to Shulk who says "We can change the future together?" Also robots are eating people that's weird. I'm assuming the talking ones are human/mech hybrids. My only major complaint is that I've had to grind twice so far due to difficult bosses. It's not too bad because there's plenty of quests and exploration to do, but if you just want to play the main game it's a drag. Edited by Moo, Nov 6 2015, 07:03 PM.

My biggest issue with Borderlands series was the story, it just wasn't interesting and at times made little sense |

I think Tales is very well written and it maintains the series sense of humour (it is set after the 2nd game). I think it is cool to play as a Hyperion guy (as well as a Pandora con artist) and get to better understand the organisation. |

Oh dear, I didn't know Xenoblade is 80+ hours long. I assumed this was one of those 30 hour RPGs like Chrono Trigger. Is there anything in the story or heart-to-hearts that's genuinely good, like an interesting development or twist, or is it just a positive story about the power of friendship? The story is poo, but on the other hand, the attack on Colony 9 was a great scenario that I didn't expect so early, and which was portrayed well up until the melodramatic death scene... If there's more cool stuff like that, I might stick it out. Also I thought the Xeno series was known for having complex plots, but this is all very straightforward so far. I'm up to Satorl Marsh, 13 hours in. It looks pretty at night. Edited by Moo, Nov 9 2015, 07:52 PM.

I forgot to add that while that giant mech who eats people made me feel ridiculous, that voice actor really committed to the bit. "I ATE 'EM ALL UP!!!"

Well yeah, it's long. There's some interesting twists and turns that occur that are quite memorable. There's a sense of scale and grandeur throughout the game that's worthwhile. It's really the last 2/3rd of the game where the cliche really kicks in. There's still a cool world to explore, challenges to engage in with plenty of equipment to find. There's skills to unlock, party compostions to play around with and there's fun combat encounters/bosses. Which where the things I liked most about the game. |

Yeah I might have spoken too soon, because I just reached the forest, which is the biggest and most beautiful location yet. I love how the pathway between here and the marsh is Bionis' trachea. The exploration is genuinely exciting and unpredictable, like a combination of NES Zelda and Shadow of the Colossus. It's not only fun to find secret areas and items but simply to discover a new part of the environment. |

Been playing a bit more Broken Age and quite enjoying it. The Vita version is quite glitchy with audio drops, poor resolution differences between NPCs and you, and crashes - but it's still fun. My only real gripe with it is that a few solutions are nonsensical. Like using a fork to untangle yarn or having Vella fire a death ray for no real reason. There are also a few things that feel like they break the games own rules. E.g. there are two occasions in the game where you can give away something you need to solve a puzzle. The entire game feels designed with a "no fail" thing so an occasional bit wher you can give away an item for no real reason is misleading. I also reached an annoying part yesterday surrounding a goal of pressing a button. If I walked over to the button ("clicking" the floor) an NPC appeared making me run for cover. I thought my strategy was wrong and spent some time before realising I had to click on the button itself rather than walking over then clicking the button. Annoying thing was that Vella walked right past the button, turned around, then pressed it. So she walked past the point that, under normal circumstances, triggered the appearance of the NPC. Oh well. Minor gripes really as I'm enjoying the story. |
