Is that Dreamfall? That's a critical darling I'll never understand the praise for. I can't remember much but I found it underwhelming and boring.

fuck the hexipal puzzle fuck broken age fuck double fine

I can't fathom how they thought this puzzle was a good idea. I've looked up a walkthrough and still have no idea how to do it (the solution is random). Did anyone manage to beat this game without any hints? My hat goes off to you.

EDIT: I "figured it out", which is to say I know what I have to do and have to go through a shameful amount of trial-and-error now to get it right. I'm certain they didn't have test players for this... It's awful. There's not a shred of fun in it.
Which puzzle are you talking about?

The one where you have to connect the wires on the hexipal in a specific way, using the photo of Shay's family as a reference point. It's a pain to figure out what you're meant to do (I was cheating and still hated it), and then a boring slog as you figure out which symbol represents which wiring. Not only THAT, but you have to repeat the puzzle at least twice to get the hexipal to do different actions, requiring you to go back and forth between Vella and Shay just to memorize the combinations. There's no challenge: it's just constant trial-and-error.

Anyway, I finished the game and what the SHIT? I went through all that and there's a one minute cutscene where nothing is resolved? Paper thin story, crappy gameplay... Fuck this pile of shit. The first act and most of Shay's second act are okay, but the rest is lazily designed and extremely unpleasant. Perhaps people complained that the first act was too easy so they shot to the other end of the spectrum? I'll admit I was somewhat impatient, especially those times where I'd be carrying eight items and needed one of them to correspond to something in the universe to advance. Too many variables, too much guessing. I couldn't be assed. How the heck could I have known that the cult dad would lick the frosting off the cupcake? I only found out by blindly using each item on each character. I would have moments in Talos and Swapper where I'd get frustrated, but more often than not it was by my own incompetence, and it was usually followed by a feeling of accomplishment when the solution revealed itself. Broken Age is nothing like that.

It seemed like such a chill game. Admittedly I didn't like Monkey Island either, because of the similar puzzles. I liked everything about Psychonauts except the mediocre gameplay, and never finished it. I'm not big on Tim Schafer I guess.

Yeah, Dreamfall. It's nowhere near as good as the original The Longest Journey. I haven't looked into the new one, but I might play it one day.
Fuck_Giver.exe has stopped working!
Does it matter how I write the truth?

Interesting. I usually hate point and click puzzle games, but I really loved this one. I admit, the puzzle you're talking about was a bit confusing and took a while to get it figured out, but other than that the rest is not so difficult. At least it's not Sam & Max which I found really tedious and frustrating at times.

Schafer is alright. I really enjoyed Psychonauts and love Broken Age. His team has always got something just off centre which is really nice and unique. Have you tried Costume Quest at all? It's a little simple, but man, I really enjoyed the first one and the DLC for it.

I haven't tried Costume Quest.

Man, you know when you play a videogame for a long time and it influences your dream? I spent all of my dream last night trying to figure out crappy Broken Age puzzles.

Regarding the plot, it sets the stage well for a good story. The protagonists are inquisitive teens who realize the world isn't what it seems and decide to break the rules, which is ripe ground for material about identity and discovery that isn't really there. They just break the rules and everything goes right for them, and their only response to the knowledge that everything they've been told is a lie is a few wry remarks. It's like they're fully grown from the start and the adventure leaves little imprint. As for Shay's revelation about his parents at the start of Act 2, I'm not sure what it's saying.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Traditions and religion are painted cynically as vehicles of exploitation, but it never extends beyond that observation. The explanation for Mog Chothra towards the end is quite out of left-field and heavy-handed. The impact of the two finally meeting at the end is weak. The whole deal with Laruna seems unfinished.

Spoiler: click to toggle

I feel the framework for a good story about teenage troubles is there, but the substance isn't. Maybe kids can identify with it more.

You should give Costume Quest a shot if you have the time. It's simple, but a lot of fun and has great personality.

It's been a while since I played Broken Age, but what I loved the most about it was that it was a story about the complexities of religion and how it can border on being a cult. I need to replay it as I really enjoyed it a lot and felt there was a lot to explore regarding religion as a whole.

As for dreaming about games - happens all the time to me. I've been playing Super Meat Boy non-stop lately and that's really inhabited my dreams a lot. Also, SOMA... that's really done a number on my sleeping at times. Although the worst would have to be when you're playing a racing game and then go for a drive almost immediately after playing it.

Eh, while religion is obviously on the game's mind, I think its depiction is caricaturist. The followers are all dupes, the leaders evil or deceitful. The Evil Church is an RPG trope that Broken Age doesn't expand on in a meaningful way.

I forget the part at the end that actually made me sad:

You just have to sort through the blind love to find a reasoned opinion. They put out some good stuff.

I liked that part quite a bit.

I'm sure there's a lot more to digest about the religion in the game than I'm able to go into, but there are moments I really enjoyed a lot like the lady who finds herself in the new world free from the cult she was once in. It's a sweet, saccharine look at religion.

Also, I loved the ice cream mountain pals and the yarn pals that are on the train and their moments. That kind of humour was great.

I'm not a huge Double Fine fan - they do some good stuff, but sometimes they don't (Brutal Legend). I don't actively seek their games out (in fact, now I think of it, I don't think there's any developers who I actively seek their games out... hmm...) but if they're good, I'll try play them.

Oh boy, I think the Life is Strange finale is released today. I read a plausible theory about how it might end:

Yes. So glad that the last episode is out. I don't play these episodic games as they're released as I prefer to play them all at once, so finally pleased to see it finished so I can jump into it.

I think Life Is Strange might me an exception to the play it all at once rule. The wait wasnt too arduous and the depth of its themes, imagery and details has allowed alot of digging up and theories to develop that probably wouldnt sink in or be discussed as thoroughly had people just rushed through it.

They're not as straightforward as Telltale games, where I'd agree that a full sit-through of them would be the way I'd play them.

Im going to get Life is Strange as soon as its on sale through Steam, heard good things about it.

Finished Far Cry 3 last week, was going to spend more time exploring the island and scoring more treasures but ultimately decided against it after completing the campaign, not enough time and not enough pay off to invest the extra time.

Moved onto Far Cry Blood dragon which is an interesting spin from the main game, almost completed the campaign now as well and will also likely avoid further exploration.

Might move onto Tomb Raider next, im slowly getting through my very dated backlog :P
