They're really talking about a widespread internet hate movement disguised under wanting ethics in games journalism.

Gamergaters were recently downloading the Something Awful forums archive because they believe the site is a front for the cause of social justice and the proof is buried in there somewhere. They're deranged.

You would think so but it lives on. People still meet about it (for some reason). The meeting in Melbourne got cancelled due to a bomb threat

Started on Xeodrifters the other day. Not sure I'm enjoying it all that much but it's supposed to be short so I'll persevere for now.

Was given a copy of Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma to review. Have actually emailed the publisher and asked if they wanted me to publish as the game is awful. Music and voice acting is good but the rest... blergh! How could they get it so wrong?!

I regret doing this now. Got me out of a couple of hours work but I should have done it :(

Started on Soma last night and so far so Bioshock. Seems interesting enough so I'm curious to see where it goes from here.

Since it was available for free, I had a play through the "Dead Kings" expansion for Assassin's Creed Unity. While it was nice to have something a little more challenging than the main game and access to a new map, overall it felt less polished than the main game. Given that they released it for free to apologise for the initial state of the game, I was a bit surprised they didn't put more effort into fixing bugs in this content.

There were a few times when I needed to reset to the last checkpoint in order to proceed. For one mission the script was that I would go to a particular area, overhear a conversation between two guards about a gate leading to underground tunnels and then use that gate. When I went to the area, I picked off the guards using berserk darts to get them to fight among each other, so never overheard the conversation. I ended up killing everyone in the area the game had told me to go, and even found the gate. However because I hadn't heard the conversation trigger the gate wouldn't open.

The DLC also introduces a few new game mechanics, but they feel a bit unfinished and don't always interact well with other game mechanics. You get a lantern to use while underground, but it never seems dark enough to need it (and you've still got Eagle Vision, which also brightens dark areas). In the end you only need to use it to solve a few puzzles and a small number of places where you need to scare off bats or bugs to proceed. It was a bit difficult to tell whether it made you more difficult to spot or not either.

They also introduced a new enemy classification of "raider leader": when you kill the leader, the AI for the rest of the raiding group flips so that they run away scared. Quite often there is nowhere for them to run away to, so they end up just standing around at the edges of the room. After they'd calmed down in this state they'd ignore you even if you walked up and started stabbing them in full view.

Lastly, it was nice to have a bit of story centred on a first civilisation "Piece of Eden" artefact. The final mission felt like a homage to Ezio using the Apple of Eden at the end of AC: Brotherhood. However, it seemed weird that none of the present day characters seemed interested in the artefact: I guess Ubisoft didn't feel like bringing those voice actors back for the DLC.

So I just tried the Battlefieldfront open beta. I'm definitely going to be playing more, and I can even see myself possibly buying the game.

Right off the bat I was impressed with the options. It's really good, well thought out options that PC games should have. Large range of FOV, various colourblind options, graphical settings that explain what they are etc. Especially the audio, being able to choose options for the dynamic range is fantastic (I went for wide, of course). All the hubbub about the game having intimidating system requirements seems to be overblown, at least on my system which is by no measure high end (i5 4690, 8GB, GTX 960). In the Hoth battle (which is the most demanding one in the beta, from my experience) in a full 40 player server on High settings with Ambient Occlusion off (Which I often turn off in games due to barely being able to even see it at work, and usually saps performance noticeably) and effects & post processing settings on medium the game runs at a very consistent 80-90FPS, and that was without the new NVIDIA drivers for the beta which I'm downloading now. The game does look very nice, nailed the Star Wars aesthetic. Same with the sound quality, just gorgeous.

I'm also very, very pleased that it doesn't use that idiotic battlelog system and just does everything from the game client.

As for gameplay, seeing as CSGO was the last MP FPS I was into, I kinda did have some problems with it immediately. You're not on an equal playing field when you start off because you haven't unlocked shit, and the graphics definitely favour being shiny over visibility, and the map design makes it basically impossible at many points to anticipate or plan for where enemies will be. However, I had to remember this game isn't designed to be legitimately competitive. It's design to be fun and purposefully chaotic. When I started playing with that mentality I really started to have a good time. For me personally there is also just an inherent enjoyment from it being Star Wars instead of generic call of battlefield MMS. So far, I like it.

I also haven't had any of the random time out disconnection issues that plagued my experience in Battlefield 3.

update: turned it up to a mix of high and ultra settings (AO still off) and it runs very similarly well. between 70-85 or so, with rare brief drops into the high 60s. Game is very well optimized.

Undertale is a sweet game from what little I've played so far. It's currently got a 96 on Metacritic based on 15 reviews. It starts off feeling similar to Earthbound (in fact it cribs its off-kilter style and humour a bit) before growing into its own and getting fun and weird. The humour also reminds me of Paper Mario 2's. It has turn-based battles where you're encouraged to resolve the fight without fighting: you defeat a budding comedian by laughing at his pun, for example. I'm yet to see why people are going crazy about it (I'm only an hour in) but it's definitely good.

The amount of perfect reviews that game is getting has me interested. It'll be a future Humble Bundle pick up no doubt.

After the initial thrill of playing a multiplayer FPS again, and just the great star wars aesthetic, I'm a hell of a lot less enthusiastic about the Battlefront beta. It has a number of issues in it's controls, in it's balancing and map design. It also seems really, really simple and basic in the beta, there seems to be a serious lack of depth. Not to mention, if the full game is all the stuff that's just greyed out, it's a pretty big lack of content. No way in hell is that worth $60AU (the cheapest I can find for pre-order, we'll see how low the street price drops once it's out).

I also have absolutely zero faith in it having a good business model, it'll be typical map pack horseshit like every other CoD, Battlefield, Titanfall, Halo etc.

Considering how close to release this beta is, it's reasonable to assume no major changes are going to get made, while I'll wait for the full release to see what people are saying relative to the beta; I'd say there's a good 90% chance I won't be buying this one.

The Beta was simply server testing is all - even though odds are they'll still have server issues in the first week. I didn't get around to playing it myself so can't comment on it, but I'm still skeptical about the whole damn thing.

Yeah, Battlefront 3 was poop.

The shooting is so shallow and there's some odd balancing issues. I've probably been spawn camped more in 1 Beta of Battlefront than I have in 2 or so years of online shooters.
I doubt the game will have much legs in it.

Best thing about the game is it captures being in the Star Wars universe/scenario well and the sound design is top of its class as usual.
