Until Dawn was always around. It showed pretty vague cinematic trailers and nobody was sure whether the game would be good or not.

It didnt get much attention than Everybody has Gone to the Rapture, due to its heavily criticized developer, who previously made the awful Dear Esther and the disappointing Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs.

I played one of the first stealthy missions in Assassin's Creed Unity, only to discover that they had removed the whistle ability found in previous games. The mission had optional objectives to kill a few guards from hiding spots, and it was kind of frustrating the way most of the guards patrol routes would place them just out of reach of the hiding spots.

It seems the two options to get a guard to break from their route are to either (a) stand out in the open so the guard will spot you, or (b) use the cherry bombs. The first option seems like the opposite of what you'd want to do when trying to be stealthy. The second would be fine if it worked more reliably: in most cases the guard will just look at where the firecracker went off without walking over to investigate.

I also don't like the new eagle vision system. I'd agree that AC4's system was a bit over powered where you could tag enemies and they'd stay highlighted for a long time even when behind walls. But the new system where it only highlights enemies in a small radius (I can often spot guards that it hasn't highlighted) and how it is on a timer make it a bit frustrating. It also doesn't help that the guards blend into the crowds now.

I really wish games like Until Dawn were $50 instead of $80. I can't justify buying games for that price anymore unless they're big meaty ones like Bloodborne or Zelda. I'm always going to be slightly bummed out paying full price for a game that only lasts 6-8 hours.

BTW did this game creep out of nowhere? I'd never heard of it until Smooth mentioned it a couple of days ago. It looks fun.
I got mine on sale for $64 at JB Hifi Last week. Tag said $69 but it scanned at $64.. not gonna argue with that :)

Pretty linear interactive story which doesn't bother me at all as it sets the mood nicely. Also pretty much what I expected when I bought it - which is why, similar to you, I didn't want to pay $80-$90 for it..

Some more thoughts on AC: Unity:

While I've found it is easier to die when surrounded by a large group of guards (as it probably should be), if you run from a fight the guards don't pursue you nearly as well as they did in previous games. In particular, they seem unable to climb buildings like they could previously, unless there is a ladder. So if you're being chased and manage to climb up a building without being shot down, it is often enough to just crouch down on the roof. The guards would mill around at the bottom of the building and eventually lose interest.

The in-game economy is very different to the previous games. In most of the games in the series, I would have run out of weapons, armour, properties, etc to buy by the end of the game. That doesn't look like the case for Unity, with some of the top level gear being priced 8 times higher than the second-from-top gear, which in turn is much more expensive than the bottom level gear. But why spend 200,000 Francs on that legendary grade sword when you could "hack" it for only 1,000 Helix Credits (worth about AU$10)? If you do go the Helix Credits route, it looks like you could easily spend $100 to kit out your character in the top level gear and then upgrade it. And of course, this high level gear is visible as soon as you get far enough in the story to start customising your character. I guess they didn't want people to accidentally spend real money on inferior gear.

Of course, like previous games you can buy certain property to provide you with a regular income. I did the Cafe Theatre missions as early as I could, which gives about 10,000 Francs every 20 minutes. I've since been slowly upgrading to legendary gear as I go and skipping the intermediate tiers. This seems to make the game feel a bit more like the previous games, with the sword doing a decent amount of damage when you get a hit in and the eagle vision reaching a more useful radius.

I was going to buy it right away because it's a game that's right down my alley. But, here are a couple of reasons why:

1) I want to wait to read the Another Dungeon review on it ;)
2a) It's stupid to release a slasher game in August when October is only two months away.
2b) It's stupid to release a slasher game when one of the biggest games of the year is out - Lara Croft Go.
3) It strikes me as the sort of game that will be available for $50 sooner rather than later.
4) I have Mad Max to play on Tuesday.
5) I still have to play Alien: Isolation.
6) I can't stop playing Rocket League. Like, seriously, I turn on my PS4 to do something, and I think 'fuck it, I'll just play a round of Rocket League til I decide what to play'. Then it's 2am and the dogs are looking at me funny and I say 'just one more'.

13 or 14 hours in I've dropped Chrono Trigger. I'm just too tired and bored of the combat, it's just not engaging or ultimately all that satisfying, and feels like a chore at this point. All it does is make me wish I was more directly controlling my characters instead of selecting attacks from a drop down menu. It's a shame, because I like the concept and plot, the characters, the atmosphere, the music, and also because in a few more hours I'd be closing in on the ending. I think I've decided once for all that turn based jRPG combat isn't for me.

Where did you get up to?

I like the combat because you've gotta think on your feet and it's hard enough to keep you on edge without becoming frustrating.

I had got the charged pendant and was collecting as many items as I could from those little sealed packages before heading back to 2300AD to get through the sealed door, so admittedly I am dropping the game during a bit of a slumpy, backtracking part but I still feel the same way about the combat.

I thought the difficulty of the combat was really shallow, it seems to always just be one gimmick (or two for the bosses) you've got to figure out, then it's really easy because you know exactly what to do.

That's a shame. I think it's an excellent game that's a testament to good design holding up over time.

Your pattern of turning on a game midway through CONTINUES.

Haha, yeah I know. Wanna start placing bets on it? Gaming for me this year feels like a 50% strike rate or something. I seem to interchangeably play games that I adore and others that I end up either deciding aren't for me or outright hating, it's crazy. I must really be getting fussy in my old age.

Speaking of, I replayed Metro Last Light recently. Awesome stuff, I think it's basically as good as 2033 but arguably not quite as well paced in the first half, and maybe with a not quite as satisfying ending. Nitpicking aside; it's great. 2033 and Last Light have honestly now reached legendary status for me, especially in conjunction with having reinstalled STALKER SoC and CoP and dicking around in them recently. I always acknowledged those games were rough around the edges, but they're just so hard to go back to now by comparison to the way more polished Metro titles. The Metro games are also a lot shorter giving them much higher replay value. I still feel that the STALKER games have more impressive wow moments, but the Metro games are just more consistently enjoyable as a whole, with their own share of wow moments. If the rumours of the next Metro game being open world are true, hence rendering it more or less a new STALKER game but with Metro quality, I may just soil my pretty pink panties.

I also started replaying Bioshock Infinite. I'm enjoying it thus far (I liked it first time, too), and considering I'm playing it after so recently enjoying Last Light, surely I'm bound to hate it. Oh noes.

I pretty much had to uninstall that game because of that whole "I'll play 3 or so rounds, it's 5 minuites per round so that's ~15 mins of funz". Then I'd just end up playing all night. That's cool and all, but the game can be frustrating. Premades can now be put into the 3v3 match queue and that some team mates you get you just want to rage at.

Though I do like 1v1 ranked. It's a little slower and is heavy of defense. And dependent on just you. But it's incredibly unspectacular in terms of execution, since alot of 1v1 is about deception and ground control. Games are also rarely close, too since you either just outright are better or worse than your opponent with very little in the way of comebacks, or the momentum of the team pulling together.

Great game, such a masterclass of design and gameplay. Sold over a million on Steam and well deserved.

When I played it last year I was surprised how similar it was to Metroid Prime. It was a very faithful conversion to 3D in terms of gameplay.

Yeah it feels as close to it as you could reasonably get to Prime but in 2D form.
