If you really don't like the VATS system of targeting body parts you can technically just not use it, but I probably wouldn't recommend it. It's very useful to get the upper hand to take enemies out, and the shooting mechanics on their own are very, very barebones and not that good. So admittedly Skyrim might be the better choice if the combat is not to your liking. That said, I don't think Skyrim has very good combat either, at least not melee. The melee sucks. While it's not out yet, it might be worth you trying Fallout 4. By the looks of what we've seen and read, they've actually made the basic FPS combat good. Deus Ex HR on the other hand is more stealth orientated, and you spend "combat" time doing things like take down moves, headshots with silenced weapons, or avoiding being seen entirely. If you do get into a proper firefight there's a functional cover system. |

Speaking of RPGs, I started playing Chrono Trigger last night (emulation on PC). Lately I'd had a bit of an itch to play not only some retro stuff (and I consider SNES 16 bit stuff to be the sweet spot) but also give jRPGs another chance. My jRPG history is as follows; GBC and GBA pokemon: Enjoyed them a lot Final Fantasy X: Tried to like it but ultimately couldn't follow the story, found the combat frustrating, the blitzball unjustifiably horrendous, characters just annoying in a lot of cases. Really strange, quirky, foreign Japanese game that I consider to just be bad. To my knowledge I endured til about the halfway mark before I realised that lots of people can indeed be wrong. Final Fantasy XIII: Played the first 90 minutes at a family members, thought it was basically just more of X. Bad story telling that left me utterly lost as to what was going on, and just weird, awkward characters. It's on Steam but I have zero intention of trying it again. Final Fantasy VII: Definitely not bad, but I wasn't in the mood to stick with it. Only played 2 hours tops. I thought the graphical inconsistency between walking around and the battle screen was very jarring. I hope whoever wanted to conserve the older character look in polygon form got fired, the battle character models look so much better. I intend to try this game again. Dark Souls games: Great games but don't really count as what I think of as jRPGs at all. As far as Chrono Trigger, so far I'm actually enjoying it. We'll see how long that lasts, but it's leagues better than those shitty newer FF games I've played. A historic issue for me with jRPGs has been the rooted-in-place style turn based combat. I think I just need to focus less on not being able to move and focus more on what strategic opportunities I have here. That said, it never annoyed me back in my pokemon days and isn't bothering me at all so far here. Maybe it's just the newer FF take on it I didn't enjoy. I do like that in CT you're not transported to another dimension to fight. |

Dark Souls is a JRPG. I havent played a WRPG like Dark Souls, but I've played JRPGs like Faxanadu, Terranigma and Sword of Mana that are almost like 2D versions of Souls games. |

I'd probably avoid Witcher 1. Most people that seemed to have tried to play it in prep for Witcher 3 stopped playing early on as the first act is pretty dull; it's also a little dated. The Witcher 2 is a good start. It can be completed in a window of 20-30 hours. It's not exactly open world and it has some linearity to it with some pretty direct goals and side stuff that ties into the main story. The closest thing you can compare it to is just a more grittier, challenging and interesting Fable game. Skyrim is a hard one to recommend, because I suggest playing it with mods. It's completely open and to get the most out of what it offers requires abit of a time commitment and exploration on your end. Playing it straight through the main quest isnt really all that great. Though some of the faction quests are pretty solid. The Souls games arent any harder than Devil May Cry 3 or Ninja Gaiden Black if you've played those. I've only played Dark Souls out of the three and I love it also for lore, atmosphere, world design as well as its weighty combat and boss encounters. Planning to replay it on PC as I stopped mid way on the 360. Edited by Red Panda, Aug 9 2015, 08:49 PM.

I was considering skipping witcher 1, due to age and have been told controls is kind of weird. Will I miss out on story content though if I jump straight into 2? |

I played 2 recently having not played 1 and it gets you up to speed on the relevant backstory. |

I'd honestly just tell people to go straight to 3, you can read up and watch videos on what happens in the first two without a great deal of trouble. It's the best game of the 3 by a wide margin.

All three games in the Witcher series were fantastic IMO. I loved the combat in #1 but also loved the changes they made for #2. Combat in #3 is the most simple of all with a few well timed strategic moves being able to make you almost invincible... but that worked well for such a long game too. In hindisight I probably enjoyed #2 the most... I think. Ah hell I don't know. It';s hard to distance my experience with one as the first one I played from #2 and #3. They're all top tier games... just play them all in whatever order you prefer

I've started playing through Rogue Legacy on the Vita on my bus rides thanks to the fact my iPod died a sad boring death (RIP 2009-2015). I've finally gotten the hang of it with levelling up characters as I'd originally locked in a map early on and stuck with that, trying to get to a set of boxes which were on the other side of a room with a shit tonne of enemies that I just wasn't powerful enough to combat. Well, ever since I just dealt with each map as its own thing (as Dave suggested in his review) I've been enjoying it even more. The Spelunky-ish nature of it is great fun. Looking forward to completing it and getting past these bosses once I'm powerful enough. |

I also started on Batman: Arkham Knight last weekend for an hour or three and the combat is great, as expected... but... I have to say... fuck the batmobile. That shit is stupid. |

Biggest problem I had with rogue legacy was the stat gating seemed too steep in the 3rd and 4th zone. I felt that you had to grind abit to accomplish any progress. While you can in theory beat the game with out much stat investment, it will only make the game tedious for an exceptional player, rather than the game being rewarding. A good tip that people seem to miss in Rogue Legacy is to use the dungeon locking system strategically to prepare for chest runs. As in, if you see a chest event that you fail or cant complete with your current character, it's a good idea that when you die, pick a character or build/skills on the next run that can accomplish getting to the chest. Yep, grinding is the biggest letdown in Rogue Legacy. I prefer The Binding of Isaac in just about every way, but RL is enjoyable. |

Decided to jump into some already installed games I had in my Steam library before jumping into the RPG's and started with Sleeping Dogs. So far a few missions into the game and it hasn't convinced me yet. I can see some bright spots in the game and chances are that it will get better with more time invested into it and get more familiar with mechanics and combat. At the moment it feels rather stiff with both controlling the character and especially driving. Im not too particularly fond of the dodgy voice overs and cliched characters and story line. Thing is I enjoyed Just Cause 2 another open world Square game and it had the same issues except for the fact that it was a little looser with it controls and interaction with environments. |

Sleepy Dawgz is pretty damn cool. I didn't care much for the storyline but I had heaps of fun with the general gameplay and mission design. Combat was especially fun and I though the driving was totally fine, you'll just get used to the arcadey feel. Also woo Rocket League! Bought it when it came out and started getting pretty decent at it. But then I was away from it for 3 weeks and have to get used to it again. Still not able to pull off a lot of the shots I was able to earlier. |
