I checked out Rocket League on the PSN+ offer, because it was free. May as well try it, even though I don't like Soccer or Cars. But I'll see what all the fuss is about because all my workmates, friends and friends' pets are playing this.

THEN I TRIED IT AND... meh. I'm not very good at controlling myself in the air and, despite tight controls, it jut isn't the game for me. Our review goes lie tomorrow and Greg even specifically mentions that I'm a weirdo who doesn't like good things

I think it is just Vita and 3DS for now. I'm playing on Vita, and the game can be driven entirely from the touch screen, so I'm kind of surprised it isn't available on Android or iOS.

I haven't played the first game, but this one has been fairly easy to follow standalone. It sounds like one of the characters appeared in the last game though (Clover).
There are a couple that carry over. It's a good game (made better if you know the story of the first one beforehand) however it never blew my mind like 999 did. Probably because I'd playd the first I guess

Personally I'm super hooked on Destiny again. Started a new Hunter and am enjoying it a lot more. Playing it as a mindless grinder this time and just enjoying the mecahnics/co-op play.

Yeah 999 reminds me of MGS2 or the TV show Lost in that it has a a mystery with heaps of narrative threads and details, but unlike those things it manages to tie everything together in a way that's logically and emotionally satisfying and doesn't feel like a cop-out.

ur bad and u should feel bad.

Unless you're some MLG pro already. About everyone struggles at controlling themselves in the air. I barely do aerials because it leaves you out of position due to the downtime of the flight down, which is incredibly important. It's not an easy game to get a handle of despite how simple it is. The game has an incredibly high skill ceiling (no pun intended) and the feeling that you're getting better at the game is just so compelling due to how satisfying the gameplay mechanics and maneuvers are. Even things like the concave of the goal post, the curved edges of the field just seems so well thought out.

And it does so without bullshit unlocks, stats, loadouts. There's no forced roles, but people have created them. Even powerups are minimal and meticulously balanced. It does so much with very little.

Well, I got to one of the actual endings of the game, and that left me with more questions. It also seems that some things I thought were just convenient game mechanics to let you explore the story are also in-world parts of the story.

I guess if the same was true for 999, then this might not have been so surprising. But it is intriguing after starting the game fresh.

I'm not particularly great at Rocket League either. I've managed to score a few goals in online matches, but it always feels like a fluke rather than a sign that I'm improving. Perhaps you'd have more fun playing against other people who suck?

Most people are pretty bad at Rocket League, falling into being that guy that just chases the ball 100% and jumps and hits the ball even if they dont have to. Or just being that guy that's too focused on their e-peen to pay attention at what's ahead of them, running into you when you're about to score an open goal.

I do think the game needs better tutorials as the training seems to encourage that behavior, creating the perception that you're supposed to jump at every opportunity you can get and play at 100% speed. The training should really teach you positioning, ball control, passing and situational awareness.

Not much of an RPG gamer but I'm feeling the need to get through my backlog.

Any advice on what series I should start with to ease myself into them. My biggest gripe with RPGs in general is time to complete them and huge open world's kind of overwhelm me. Prefer a more linear experience.

I have 3 in mind. One being skyrim but that is the only game I have in the series. Considering witcher and that includes the original game and 2. I'll be getting 3 sometime in the future. The last series is the souls games going back to demon souls. I have them all except bloodborne but not really included in that series.

My platform for the games is all PC except demon souls.

The Souls games are the most linear and the least verbose of the lot. When I played Dark Souls last year I felt like a kid playing Zelda, it's that fun. The only reason you might not like the series is because it's very hard and you'll die a lot. It's also long, but all the games you mentioned are long.

Yeah I understand souls is frustrating and quite difficult but I figure I'm skillful enough to complete it. Although it could seriously frustrate the shit out of me with constant restarts and repeating battles over and over again.

It might help to just try to change your mentality with RPGs so that you're not focusing on doing everything. You don't have to do everything, and if you feel like you do, just try to focus on one thing at a time. Just devote your attention to one thing you want to do, complete it, then pick something else to do. In the vast majority of cases the other stuff isn't going to go away so don't feel you need to divide you attention between 100 things at once. That said, the bigger games like your Witcher 3 or Skyrim are going to be the worst offenders for feeling overwhelmed. One that I think would be quite accessible is Deus Ex Human Revolution. I think you should try that if you haven't. It doesn't place much more than 3 or so different quests at a time and the world is segmented so you don't have absurdly huge areas to wander around and get too lost it, but you're certainly given enough room to explore. It's also a prequel to the original 2000 game, so you need zero prior knowledge to jump in, and it has it's own sequel coming.

I'd honestly recommend Fallout 3 and New Vegas (The latter being the better, more faithful Fallout game, but 3 is still good) over Skyrim not only because I found them less flawed but because they're smaller games.

I also agree that of what you listed, Souls are the most straightforward. They really don't throw a lot of shit at you at once, they're very easily digestible. You might want to look up recommendations for leveling and gear here and there but that's about it, really. They're considerably more difficult than the others, though.

I tried Fallout 3 and didnt like it. Well actually I did like it up to the point of when the shooting mechanics started, dont like turn based combat. I guess Fallout 3 doesnt really fall into that category but the freezing and choosing where to hit the enemy for points damage isnt my thing. The rest of the game was pretty interesting actually.

I know Borderlands is more like a shooter with RPG elements but would have preferred Fallout 3 to have more of a combat system like that.

Skyrim is kind of like Fallout without the guns or VATS (the turn based auto-targeting system you say you don't like). I hadn't played the previous Elder Scrolls games, but still found this one enjoyable. The previous game is more like part of the history of the world rather than a Skyrim being a continuation of the story.

It is also the kind of game that you could easily spend twenty hours exploring the world without progressing in the main story quest line. With that said, if you are only interested in that quest line, it is clearly marked in the quest log so if you're worried about getting lost/side-tracked it is always easy to work out where you need to go next.

Borderlands is best played co-op. You can play solo, but it can get a bit lonely, and the second game is really badly balanced for single player. I still haven't made it all the way through the end of the second game (I think I'm only one or two missions off too).
