Which lead characters are you referring to? The old man and his direct contacts or the scientists? |

Ah ok. I never viewed them as overly important characters so I didn't care that they were boring

I've been hooked like crazy on Fat Princess again. Got the kids into it a few weeks ago and it's loads of fun with 4 of us

An example of why Crusader Kings II is so much fun: For almost 300 years my Kingdom of Leon has co-existed with the Kingdom of Castile as the two dominant powers in Spain. Aside from a few skirmishes we have never tried to conquer one another, because taking land is complicated in CKII and in this case it would have taken a very long time. I've gained a lot of holdings in the Middle East but have dreamt of conquering Castile since day one, so when a Castilian duke usurped the throne of Castile and I noticed his only child and sole heir was a daughter one year away from marriage age: -I tried to get a divorce from my own wife but the Pope wouldn't allow it, so instead I plotted to and succeeded in having my wife fall from a balcony to her death. -I asked the King of Castile for his daughter's hand in marriage. He accepted. -I plotted to have the King of Castile murdered to ensure he didn't have any sons. Kingslaying is difficult, but this guy had just usurped the throne and plenty of people in his realm wanted him dead. He was killed by archers while on a stroll and my wife became Queen of Castile. -I had a son with my wife, who became the heir of Castile. I already had another son who was the heir to Leon, meaning when I died I would play as him and not inherit Castile. I took this son who worshipped me and had all the makings of a king (as in statistically he was a godsend), imprisoned him and executed him. My vassals despise me for this. So my newborn son is now the heir to Leon and Castile. All I need to happen now is for his mother to die before he does (because we've only had daughters since and, since I have a daughter from my wife I pushed off a balcony, in the event of my son's untimely demise she will inherit Leon but not Castile). I can die at any point and I hope it happens soon, because my vassals think I'm a tyrant and they're plotting against me as we speak. Edited by Moo, Mar 6 2015, 12:08 PM.

This is tense. I've since died and now I'm playing as my son. In CKII you don't have much control over what kind of person you develop into. At 16 I'm a gluttonous pig who has fallen ill twice. My wife thinks I'm unattractive. My mother, the Queen of Castile, seems fit as a fiddle and shows no signs of dying anytime soon. She's also shored up relations with her subjects, meaning a plot to kill her is virtually impossible. The future of my domain hangs on my stupid fat heart holding out longer than my mother's. |

You can't write yourself off. You can only end your rule as a particular character by dying, and suicide isn't an option. I actually turned out okay anyway. I'm in my mid-30s, I'm great with money, my vassals like me, I have 5 kids, and I'm an okay fighter. I'm just a tubby man is all. Mum status: alive. Edited by Moo, Mar 6 2015, 04:28 PM.

Conclusion: My mother died at 65 and I now own enough of Spain to vassalize kingdoms themselves. The pudgy king is now the First Emperor of Hispania. |

That sounds so great, but I know that it's probably a game I'll never get into. |

The learning curve is steep. I've played for over 70 hours and I'm still learning new stuff. I get where you're coming from cause I tried playing Total War: Rome 2 when it was free on Steam a few weeks ago and couldn't be assed to figure stuff out. Also I'm currently posting from my phone with no credit and I have no clue why it's working. |

Jumped back into Apotheon today to find that the problem I had from the last time I played - where I somehow managed to get stuck in the scenery - is still there and has now affected all my saves. What a bumfuck of a glitch. |

Hahaha I was wrong. My wife died and I became depressed, and having the depressed trait gives you the option to commit suicide. My wife just happened to be the Queen of Aquitane (a large kingdom between France and Spain that I have never heard of) so now all of that belongs to our son, me, the new emperor of glorious Hispania. The game will end in about 6 years (about 30 minutes) and my empire stretches from Spain to North France and Baghdad to North Africa. It is all thanks to throwing my wife off a balcony. Before then I only had about a third of Spain and Jerusalem. Edited by Moo, Mar 7 2015, 09:05 PM.
